The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to cutting‑edge drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as a staff of more than 50 research technicians and department administrators interact closely with the faculty. Under direction, the incumbent will engage in difficult and complex research projects in collaboration with a Principal Investigator, making original contributions pertaining to signaling and new therapeutics in head and neck cancer research. The incumbent will consult with the PI on the nature and general plan of approach to research problems; read and abstract scientific articles pertaining to broad research problems; and proceed without specific direction to organize research projects. The incumbent will develop and implement experimental techniques, design, plan, troubleshoot, and analyze data. This position affords significant latitude for complex research projects, decision‑making, and independent judgment. In consultation with the PI, the incumbent will analyze data and contribute content for the preparation of laboratory manuscripts for publication, write conclusions to illustrate and organize experimental results, co‑author articles, draft and edit scientific abstracts, and write research grant proposals including updates and progress reports. The incumbent will manage manuscript submissions and grant proposal processing, review and edit submissions for accuracy, provide work direction to lab personnel, act as liaison to the Pharmacology Business Office, and perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Extensive theoretical and experimental knowledge in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and related sciences acquired through a combination of education and experience. Demonstrated ability to contribute original ideas in the planning and design of experiments and to develop and adapt new techniques and modify established protocols. Demonstrable skill and extensive experience in a variety of cellular and molecular biology laboratory techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of NIH grant procedures and the ability to write large NIH grants, assemble and coordinate large multi‑institutional grants. Demonstrated ability to write and publish articles for scientific journals. Ability to devise sophisticated and complex modifications to accomplish research results. Demonstrated experience interpreting, troubleshooting, and analyzing results of scientific experiments. Excellent positive interpersonal skills and the ability to work with faculty, students, and staff in a diverse group. Knowledge of and adherence to laboratory safety regulations, requirements, and procedures. Advanced knowledge and experience using Mac and PC computers and scientific software for operating equipment and data analysis, including Adobe Photoshop, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Word. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of UC policies and procedures governing purchasing and personnel, and extensive knowledge of State and Federal regulations and requirements. Special Conditions Employment is subject to a criminal background check. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including overtime as needed, for certain experiments. Must be willing and able to work with mice. Must be willing and able to work safely in an environment of possible exposure to radiation and other biological and chemical hazards.
