Financial Counselor

Location: Onsite for approximately the first 2 months; remote eligibility after successful training and performance
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, with a rotating Saturday
Pay Rate: $18-$20/hour
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire (640 hours)
Start Date: ASAP

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Financial Counselor to support patient access, insurance verification, authorizations, and financial counseling functions within a fast-paced healthcare environment. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with medical authorizations and insurance verification and be comfortable managing multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and productivity.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced healthcare professional looking for a contract-to-hire position with potential for remote work after training and meeting performance expectations.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and process medical authorizations for scheduled procedures and services.

• Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits with insurance carriers.

• Determine in-network versus out-of-network benefits and applicable coverage requirements.

• Contact physician offices, payers, and patients to obtain necessary authorization and insurance information.

• Review and document authorization and benefit information accurately in the registration system.

• Explain insurance benefits, copays, deductibles, and self-pay responsibilities to patients.

• Assist with price estimates and communicate expected patient financial responsibilities.

• Gather and verify patient demographic, insurance, and financial information.

• Obtain required forms, signatures, insurance cards, identification, and supporting documentation.

• Maintain accurate records and departmental logs.

• Perform pre-registration and financial counseling activities as needed.

• Follow established policies and procedures related to patient financial services, collections, and compliance.

• Handle a high volume of calls and maintain accurate documentation of payer and patient interactions.

• Meet established productivity, quality, accuracy, and customer service standards.

• Collaborate with internal teams, physician offices, insurance companies, and patients to resolve authorization and benefit issues.

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in medical authorizations and insurance verification preferred.

• Experience within a hospital, large medical group, physician organization, or insurance environment .

• Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume healthcare setting.

• Strong knowledge of insurance eligibility, benefits, and authorization processes.

• Experience with scheduling and/or patient access functions.

• Strong organizational and multitasking skills.

• Ability to maintain accuracy while working under productivity expectations.

• Excellent communication and customer service skills.

• Ability to work independently and remain accountable for assigned work.

Healthcare experience must be in hospital, physician/medical group, or insurance settings. Dental and pharmacy experience will not meet the primary requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Epic .

• Previous remote work experience in a metrics-driven healthcare environment.

• Experience with price estimates and patient financial responsibility.

• Knowledge of payer contracts and determining in-network versus out-of-network status.

Schedule & Remote Opportunity

• Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM .

• Rotating Saturday coverage begins approximately after 6 weeks of training.

• A weekday off will be provided in lieu of the Saturday worked.

• Saturday schedules and corresponding days off will be provided approximately 30 days in advance.

• Position is onsite during the initial training period , with the potential to transition to 100% remote after training and upon meeting productivity and quality expectations.

• Approximately 20-50 calls per day , depending on workflow and volume

• Ability to consistently meet departmental metrics

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a seasoned Authorizations and Insurance Verification Specialist who is organized, attentive, accountable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Candidates with experience in a large hospital or physician organization and prior remote, metrics-driven work experience are strongly preferred.
