Heavy Equipment Diesel Technician 

Department: CE Family Shop 

Location: Turner Field 

Reports To: Service Manager 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly 

Employment Type: Full-Time 

Position Summary 

The Heavy Equipment Diesel Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and related support equipment owned or operated by CE Family companies. This position, based at the CE Family Shop at Turner Field, supports fleet availability, reliable operation, repair-cost control, and safe service across all CE Family divisions. 

The Technician performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, component replacement, and service documentation while following CE Family safety requirements, OEM procedures, and applicable DOT and environmental standards. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, lubrication, fluid services, and repairs on heavy construction equipment, on-road trucks, trailers, pickups, generators, compressors, and other CE Family assets. 
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic-control issues using diagnostic so ware, test equipment, OEM manuals, wiring diagrams, and service literature. 
• Repair, rebuild, replace, and adjust engines, powertrain components, transmissions, differentials, cooling systems, brakes, steering systems, suspensions, HVAC systems, exhaust and emissions systems, and fuel systems. 
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, hoses, valves, controls, and attachments. 
• Perform equipment inspections to identify safety defects, reliability concerns, required repairs, and upcoming maintenance needs. 
• Complete work orders accurately and promptly, documenting labor, parts, failure causes, corrective actions, and recommended follow-up work. 
• Communicate repair status, equipment condition, required parts, and anticipated downtime to the Service Manager and applicable division representatives. 
• Use parts catalogs, vendor resources, and OEM systems to identify correct parts and assist with repair estimates, purchase requests, and parts ordering. 
• Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and minor structural repairs when qualified and authorized. 
• Safely operate equipment, trucks, forklifts, hoists, jacks, cranes, and shop tools as necessary to diagnose, test, repair, and return equipment to service. 
• Conduct post-repair functional testing and verify that equipment is safe and ready for operation before release. 
• Assist with field-service calls, emergency repairs, and equipment transfers at CE Family locations and project sites when assigned. 
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area, including tools, service bays, parts areas, and assigned service vehicles. 
• Report unsafe equipment, shop conditions, near misses, incidents, and environmental concerns immediately. 
• Support inventory control by properly handling cores, warranty parts, fluids, filters, tires, batteries, and shop consumables. 
• Work collaboratively with operators, drivers, foremen, superintendents, division leaders, vendors, and other shop personnel to improve equipment reliability and uptime across the CE Family. 
• Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned. 

Required Qualifications  

• High school diploma or GED. 
• Minimum of 3 years of experience repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment, construction equipment, heavy-duty trucks, or comparable fleet assets. Equivalent technical education, apprenticeship, or OEM training may be considered. 
• Demonstrated experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air brakes, drivetrains, cooling systems, and computerized diagnostics. 
• Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, parts books, and service bulletins. 
• Proficiency using hand tools, pneumatic tools, precision measuring tools, diagnostic so ware, and shop equipment. 
• Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. 
• Ability to complete work orders and use digital maintenance-management, timekeeping, and fleet so ware. 
• Strong troubleshooting, organization, communication, and time-management skills. 
• Ability to work independently, prioritize urgent repairs, and contribute effectively within a multi-division team. 

Preferred Qualifications  

• Technical-school diploma, certificate, or associate degree in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, automotive technology, or a related field. 
• ASE certifications in medium/heavy truck or equipment-related areas. 
• OEM training or experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, Volvo, Hitachi, Kubota, CASE, Hyundai, Develon, Bobcat, Takeuchi, or similar equipment. 
• Experience with Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Allison, Eaton, and comparable engine and drivetrain systems. 
• Valid CDL, preferably Class A, or willingness to obtain one if required for the position. 
• EPA Section 608 certification for HVAC work. 
• Welding, fabrication, and/or mobile field-service experience. 
• Familiarity with DOT inspection requirements for commercial vehicles and trailers. 

Safety and Physical Requirements 

• This is a safety-sensitive position. The employee must consistently follow all CE Family safety policies, shop procedures, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout practices, lifting and rigging procedures, and applicable OSHA, DOT, and environmental requirements. 
• Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in confined or awkward positions. 
• Ability to climb on and off equipment and work at various heights. 
• Ability to regularly li, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle heavier components using proper lifting equipment or assistance. 
• Ability to work around noise, vibration, grease, dust, fumes, moving equipment, and changing indoor/outdoor weather conditions. 
• Ability to work overtime, respond to urgent equipment needs, and travel to CE Family locations or local jobsites as needed. 
• Ability to satisfy applicable pre-employment and ongoing drug/alcohol, background, driving-record, and physical-capability requirements.

• Equipment availability and a reduction in avoidable downtime across CE Family divisions. 
• Completion of preventive maintenance on schedule. 
• Accurate, efficient diagnosis and quality repairs. 
• Timely and complete work-order documentation. 
• Accountability for labor, parts, tools, and shop assets. 
• Consistent safe-work performance and compliance with shop standards. 
• Effective service and communication with supported CE Family divisions.
