Salary : $40,000 - $60,000 Johns Hopkins University: Whiting School of Engineering: Office ofResearch and Translation Description PREP Research Associate This position is part of the National Institute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP).NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaboratewith researchers at academic institutions on specific projects ofmutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to berecipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from awide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research acrossvarious fields. Individuals in this position will perform technicalwork supporting the collaboration's scientific research. Research Title: Modelica Modeling in Support of a BuildingDigital Twin The work will entail: NIST has several projects related to digital twins in the builtenvironment. These projects are developing the infrastructureneeded to ease the development and deployment of digital twins andinform existing and future standards. The Intelligent BuildingAgents Laboratory (IBAL) is being used in these efforts. A Modelicamodel was developed for the IBAL, but this model needs to be beimproved and updated so that it can be used to demonstrate the fullphysical-digital twin workflow. Guideline 36 controllers need to beadded to the model, and the parameters that will be tuned to alignthe digital twin with the physical twin need to be identified. Someof these parameters are not tunable when the model is converted toan FMU for co-simulation, so some models will need to be modifiedor developed to make those parameters available after the FMU hasbeen compiled. U.S. Citizen Preferred Key responsibilities will include but are not limitedto: Reviewing and understanding the existing models. Identifying the parameters that need to be tuned. Modifying and developing new models as needed. Adding Guideline 36 controllers to the model. Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetingswith external stakeholders. Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentationhave been archived or otherwise transmitted to the largerorganization. Qualifications An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Engineering. Experience with Modelica modeling using the Buildingslibrary. Preferred experience with Modelica modeling inOpenModelica. Preferred experience with FMUs and co-simulation in Python. Strong oral and written communication skills. A master’s or PhD in engineering or physics or related field. A background in performing experimental work, data collection andanalysis. Ability to control, operate and automate scientific test equipmentand instrumentation. Familiarity with MATLAB or Python.
