Description Position title: Supervisor I, Zero Waste Division: Social Enterprise Department: Zero Waste Reports to: Zero Waste Operations Manager FLSA Status: Full Time/Non-Exempt Compensation: $29.50 to $32.64 hourly / per hour Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with occasional weekend work Location: This position is 100% in person, located at 1560 Berger Drive San Jose, CA 95112 Travel: Local travel may be required up to 50% of the time, transporting Corpsmember crews to different job sites around Santa Clara County About the San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC+CS) One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma. Be a part of our mission to create transformational change and learn more at Position Summary The Zero Waste Supervisor I plays an important operations role for the San Jose Conservation Corps’ Zero Waste unit. The Supervisor is responsible for maintaining internal records and managing several project databases. The Supervisor also provides operational assistance to the Zero Waste Team to ensure that our projects and special events work plan goals are executed. The Zero Waste Supervisor also works to develop effective relationships with shareholders in the Zero Waste Industry. Additionally, they play a lead role in engaging with members of the public. This position will oversee SJCC’s efforts to divert different types of waste from landfills, as well as related programs aimed at increasing the recycling of waste in general. Job Duties Administrative Occasionally responds to all Zero Waste emails and cc’s the Zero Waste Operations Manager in all emails Occasionally creates Google master calendars to facilitate internal organization and attendance tracking Supports in the creation of Zero Waste binders for routes Participates in Zero Waste staff meetings and other convenings as requested, coming prepared to report on key updates and personal progress Complete daily and weekly reports, corpsmember evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc., and submit in a timely and highly detailed manner Deliver difficult conversations, write-ups, etc. Track all project related outcomes and deliverables, such as collection weights and quantities Track team progress and key project data Check in daily and submit comprehensive End of Week reports weekly Contribute to an organized and high-performing workplace Lock up Berger site daily Other duties as assigned General Zero Waste Operations Coordinates with haulers for on-site waste pick ups Tracks waste collection data for residential, business, and/or different events Works with Zero Waste Coordinators and Supervisors to provide quarterly collection totals of different types of waste material Assists the Zero Waste Department in warehouse management and supervision SJCC Zero Waste Routes Assists the Zero Waste Department and Leads with prepping residential flyers Assists with residential routes for Waste Collection Completes SJCC residential and business flyering and pick ups Completes SJCC Waste Collection routes Zero Waste Saturday Events Gathers and reports all waste material data collected on event days Offers warehouse organization and management assistance to E‑Waste Coordinator and Crew Lead to ensure all event material is organized Other duties as assigned Leadership and Mentorship Manage, supervise, and lead the day‑to‑day engagement of corpsmembers in project work Implement skills training and facilitate intentional discussions and informal lessons to contribute to the corpsmembers’ personal growth and group dynamics Promote individual corpsmember development and a healthy, supportive community Follow and enforce all SJCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent the San Jose Conservation Corps Safety & Risk Management Monitor and support the corpsmembers' physical and emotional safety during work hours, while implementing any work project Ensure corpsmembers are wearing proper uniforms and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety Conduct Fleetio inspection daily, report any maintenance needs or damage to management Transport corpsmembers and equipment safely in SJCC vans or large vehicles Follow SJCC COVID-19 Mitigation protocol and ensure corpsmembers do the same Conduct daily inspections, cleanouts, and maintenance of vehicles Regularly review the Corpsmember Handbook and maintain familiarity with all policies Report incidents to management immediately and appropriately Administration and Team Communication Participate in weekly Zero Waste Staff and E‑Waste Team meetings and other convenings as requested, coming prepared to report on key updates and personal progress Complete LinkedIn and other soft-skill training; come prepared to participate in discussion hour Complete attendance tracking, daily and weekly reports, corpsmember evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc., and submit in a timely and highly detailed manner Track all project-related outcomes and deliverables, such as collection weights and quantities Contribute to an organized and high‑performing workplace Equity and Inclusion Help build a work culture that values the range of different backgrounds and identities that people bring, appreciates that diversity makes us better at what we do, and strives to create an environment in which everyone on the margins can thrive Ensure that all staff and Corpsmembers feel safe and valued Salary and Benefits Salary: Placement on the compensation scale is determined using a number of factors, including the candidate’s level of experience and education that either meets or significantly exceeds the minimum requirements. 403(b) Retirement Benefits with up to 3% employer match after 1 year of service Credit Union and Employee Assistance Plan Medical, Vision, Dental, and Life Insurance Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Pay Pet Insurance Education Assistance Program Subsidized annual Eco Pass Work Environment & Requirements Position requires sitting, standing, walking on occasionally uneven and/or slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. Minimum Qualifications High school Diploma or GED 1 year of supervisory experience leading young adults, OR Equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others 1 year of work experience in any of the following areas: waste materials recovery, edible food recovery, zero waste community outreach, composting, or similar. Proficiency in using tools/safety equipment appropriate for various work projects. The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance. Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth. The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely. Knowledge of safe work practices and first aid/CPR. The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation. Customer Service Experience - able to identify and resolve customer concerns. Computer literate. The candidate also must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.
