Alaska Power & Telephone Company

Metering Program Lead Alaska Power & Telephone is hiring for a full-time Metering Program Lead to own metering related work across our systems, working out of an AP&T office or a home-based location in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest. This position works in the field and travels to remote sites as needed. The Metering Program Lead is responsible for leading metering-related work (ordering, configuration, and programming), supporting Properties and Billing with metering issues, managing metering upgrade rollouts, and helping standardize metering practices and documentation across AP&T. AP&T is an employee-owned, vertically integrated utility that independently owns and operates ten isolated power systems across a large expanse of Alaska. We incorporate hydro, solar and diesel resources to provide economic power to the communities we serve. As a small utility we offer a diversity of experience. We work together to safely integrate innovative new generation resources, renewables, address day-to-day operational issues, install and maintain equipment, address regulatory requirements and other such tasks. The successful candidate will take ownership of AP&T's metering program and provide leadership on a variety of metering projects across our service territory. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Specify, procure, and manage meters, current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), and related metering equipment
  • Configure and program meters and communication devices
  • Develop and maintain metering standards including meter forms, settings, and documentation
  • Oversee commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of metering systems
  • Lead and document the meter audit program
  • Support regulatory documentation requirements
  • Support Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems
  • Work with Billing to validate meter data and resolve discrepancies
  • Investigate revenue losses and ensure metering accuracy
  • Ensure compliance with applicable metering standards, NESC, NEC and State of Alaska requirements
  • Lead metering upgrade projects, including AMI deployments and retrofits
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, MIS, vendors, and contractors
  • Support and provide guidance to metering personnel
  • Provide field support and travel to remote sites as needed
  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with safety procedures
Required Qualifications:
  • 2- or 4-year degree in electrical/electronics engineering technology or a related technical field, OR equivalent journeyman-level metering/electrical experience
  • Five or more years of hands-on electric metering experience — installation, configuration, programming, and testing of self-contained and instrument-rated (CT/PT) metering
  • Working knowledge of CTs, PTs, and revenue metering accuracy
  • Ability to interpret and apply metering standards, NESC, and NEC requirements
  • Ability to self-motivate, manage time, plan projects, and communicate with other team members
  • Ability to safely identify hazards and work around energized electrical equipment
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office and metering/communication software tools
  • Current passport and ability to travel to remote sites, up to 30% of workload (reduced if in or near AP&T-served communities)
  • Mental flexibility, willingness to learn unfamiliar parts of the job, and a positive attitude
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Landis + Gyr and Aclara metering and software tools (for both powerline and RF systems)
  • Extensive involvement with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployments and retrofits
  • Experience developing metering standards, meter forms, settings, and drawing practices
  • Experience leading meter audit, revenue-protection, or loss-investigation programs
  • Familiarity with utility electric tariffs and rules
  • Meter technician / metering certification(s)
  • Familiar with isolated Alaskan communities and the challenges of travel and planning projects in the region
Physical Requirements of the Position:
  • At times work will be performed around energized electrical equipment
  • At times work will be performed in non-temperature-controlled environments
  • At times work will be performed while sitting, standing, crouching, squatting, and reaching at heights
  • At times work will be performed in a standard office environment with regularly scheduled working hours
  • Must be capable of safely lifting up to 60 pounds on occasion and maintaining good balance
  • Safety and PPE must be worn at all times when performing work in the field
  • Occasional travel may be required by small planes, ferry, helicopter, boats, and/or ATV
The pay range for this position is $60-$70 hourly and is DOE. AP&T offers a generous benefit package including (but not limited to) medical, dental, vision, 401K, (plus more) a $5,000.00 annual medical travel reimbursement for employees in Alaska, up to $125 annual medivac insurance reimbursement and employee stock ownership options. $150.00 in company logowear. Recognition of our employees is important to AP&T's values. We like to continuously show appreciation and recognition within our teams. AP&T is a small non-union, employee-owned utility serving over 40 Alaskan communities and villages. AP&T is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are a Drug & Alcohol-Free Workplace.
