Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant

Job Summary The role of the Physician Assistant within the Department of Emergency Medicine is to provide independent, advanced level clinical operations to emergency medical patients and their families. This includes management of chronic or stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care while following specialty protocols defined by standardized procedures. The position may involve non-invasive or invasive procedures, including surgical procedures, and operative first assist per approved standard procedure for the department. Clinical responsibilities include outpatient and inpatient environments, pre‑ and post‑operative coordination and management. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other team members. PAs are expected to act as an expert resource for health care providers including nurses, residents, and ancillary staff. Minimum Qualifications California Licensed Physician Assistant (PA) National Certification (NCCPA) as a Physician Assistant in an aligned specialty American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications within 1 year of hire Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate within 3 months of hire Graduation with a master’s or PhD degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program, or completion of certified Physician Assistant training from an accredited program At least three years full‑time experience as a PA in the aligned specialty Ability to provide direct patient care to a diversified complex patient population Ability to serve as an operational leader in precepting and educating students, residents and advanced practice learners Working knowledge of HIPAA regulations Exemplary judgment and priority setting in clinical situations Participation in patient and staff education Demonstrated leadership skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Self‑direction and organizational skills for independent role Meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing as a billable provider Accountability for own practices as defined by the California Physician Assistant Board Ability to work flexible hours Preferred Qualifications One year or greater recent clinical experience in specialty care of the hiring department Key Responsibilities 80% – Inpatient/Outpatient responsibilities 10% – Professional Development 5% – Quality and Evidence‑Based Practice 5% – Education/Research Department Overview Emergency Medicine provides Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California’s 58 counties. The UC Davis Health System houses state‑of‑the‑art emergency care for children. The Pediatric Emergency Department is the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in inland Northern California, verified by the American College of Surgeons. The department treats approximately 70 000 patients each year and is staffed by physicians, nurses, 42 residents, and 26 specialists across all medical and surgical specialties. The team delivers comprehensive emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
