Equipment Operator

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Equipment Operator to support TJ Cable’s underground utility and civil construction operations. This position operates construction equipment used for excavation, trenching, boring, grading, backfilling, material handling, and site restoration. The Equipment Operator is responsible for completing work safely and accurately while protecting existing utilities, property, coworkers, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Operate excavators, mini-excavators, skid loaders, backhoes, trenchers, loaders, compactors, forklifts, and other assigned construction equipment.
• Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, compacting, material handling, and site-restoration activities.
• Follow project plans, utility markings, grade requirements, and instructions from the Foreman or Superintendent.
• Maintain safe clearance from underground and overhead utilities, employees, equipment, traffic, and surrounding property.
• Complete pre-operation and post-operation inspections and report equipment damage, defects, or maintenance needs.
• Perform routine equipment care, including cleaning, fueling, greasing, and minor maintenance within the operator’s training.
• Coordinate with spotters, locators, laborers, truck drivers, and other crew members using hand or radio signals.
• Assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and securing equipment and attachments when properly trained and authorized.
• Follow company safety procedures and applicable excavation, trenching, traffic-control, and environmental requirements.
• Maintain accurate equipment inspections, operating records, and daily work documentation.
• Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions, utility conflicts, equipment malfunctions, or property damage.
• Assist with general field and site-cleanup duties when equipment operation is not required.

Qualifications

• Previous experience operating construction or utility equipment.
• Working knowledge of equipment controls, operating limitations, inspections, and basic maintenance.
• Ability to read and follow utility markings, site plans, grade information, and work instructions.
• Understanding of excavation hazards, equipment blind spots, ground conditions, and safe operating practices.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work safely as part of a field crew.
• Dependable attendance, good judgment, and strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record may be required.
• Experience in underground utility, telecommunications, civil, excavation, or directional-drilling construction.
• Experience operating Vermeer, Ditch Witch, CAT, Bobcat, or similar equipment.
• Knowledge of utility locating, trench protection, soil conditions, grading, and damage-prevention practices.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training.
• Commercial driver’s license or applicable equipment certifications.

• Frequently sit for extended periods while operating construction equipment.
• Frequently use hands, arms, legs, and feet to operate controls, levers, pedals, steering mechanisms, and attachments.
• Occasionally stand or walk on uneven, muddy, rocky, slippery, or sloped terrain.
• Occasionally climb into and out of equipment using steps, ladders, and handholds.
• Occasionally bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, push, and pull while inspecting, servicing, or working around equipment.
• Frequently lift and carry tools, supplies, or materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds, using team lifting or mechanical assistance when appropriate.
• Constantly remain aware of equipment movement, ground conditions, utility markings, traffic, coworkers, pedestrians, and changing jobsite hazards.
• Frequently use sufficient vision, depth perception, hearing, coordination, and reaction time to operate equipment, read instruments, recognize alarms, and respond to signals.
• Frequently work outdoors in varying weather and around noise, vibration, dust, mud, exhaust, moving equipment, excavations, and underground or overhead utilities.
• Constantly wear required personal protective equipment in designated work areas.
• Perform the position’s essential duties for a full shift, including overtime, extended hours, travel, or emergency assignments when required, with or without reasonable accommodation.
