Position Title: Assistant ComptrollerPosition Type: Full-Time, Salary, ExemptSchedule: 35 hours/weekFormat: Hybrid (2–3 days in office)Department: FinanceLocation: 1 Pierrepont PlazaReports To: AVP FinanceDirect Reports: 2 AP AnalystAbout Graham WindhamGraham Windham equips children, young adults, and families with life-changing tools to overcome systemic barriers driven by poverty, racial inequity, and unequal access to opportunity.Through deep community partnerships and innovative, data-informed strategies, we advance our Vision 2029 ambition to ensure every individual we serve has a pathway to a healthy, joyful, and successful life.Role OverviewThe Assistant Comptroller is responsible for supervising and overseeing a broad range of accounting, accounts payable, financial reporting, general ledger, and financial compliance functions to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the agency’s financial operations.Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Finance, this position partners closely with Finance leadership to maintain strong internal controls, ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory requirements, and organizational policies, while supporting the agency’s overall financial health.The Assistant Comptroller provides day-to-day leadership to the accounting function, oversees the monthly and annual financial close process, manages accounts payable operations, reviews reconciliations and financial transactions, supports annual audits, prepares required government reports, and assists with budgeting and grant reporting activities. The role also drives continuous process improvement by enhancing financial systems, strengthening internal controls, and improving operational efficiencies that support Graham Windham’s mission.Key ResponsibilitiesMonitor, record, and reconcile all agency investment portfolio transactions on a monthly basis.Prepare supporting schedules and ensure investment activity is accurately reflected in the general ledgerAsset Management & Fiscal OperationsOversee agency fixed asset accounting, including recording acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, and maintaining supporting schedules.Reconcile fixed asset records with the general ledger and applicable accounting systems.Identify opportunities to enhance fiscal technology and accounting systems to improve efficiency and support hybrid work operations.Financial Reporting and CompliancePrepare and review required government and regulatory reports, including but not limited to:Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR)IRS Form 990Pension Form 5500ACS Schedule 7Other required federal, state, and local financial reportsPrepare journal entries and supporting schedules for site allocations and other required accounting adjustments.Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, grant guidelines, and organizational policies.Audit ManagementCoordinate all internal and external audit activities.Serve as the primary liaison with independent auditors, government agencies, and regulatory reviewers.Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and respond to audit inquiries in a timely manner.Financial ReconciliationPerform and review reconciliations of general ledger accounts.Reconcile agency MetroCard, gift card, and other assigned financial accounts.Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.Accounts PayableOversee all Accounts Payable operations to ensure timely and accurate vendor payments.Review payment processing, vendor reconciliations, and aging reports.Provide regular disbursement and aging reports to the Chief Financial Officer.Partner with the Chief Administrative Officer to maximize integration between Purchasing and Accounts Payable systems.LeadershipSupervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting accountability, collaboration, and professional development.Recommend and implement process improvements that strengthen financial controls and operational effectiveness.Participate in cross-functional initiatives supporting organizational priorities.Special ProjectsLead or participate in short- and long-term projects assigned by the Chief Financial Officer, Assistant Vice President of Finance, or other senior leadership.Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.Core CompetenciesStrong knowledge of nonprofit and government accounting principles.Comprehensive understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex financial information.Advanced analytical and quantitative skills.Excellent organizational and project management abilities.Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy.Ability to establish collaborative relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and independent decision-making.Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.CPA designation strongly preferred.Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience in a nonprofit or government environment.Supervisory experience preferred.Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, grants management, and audit preparation.Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.Experience with Sage MIP Accounting System strongly preferred.Knowledge of inventory management and purchasing practices preferred.Demonstrated ability to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, funding sources, and accreditation standards.Excellent written and verbal communication skillsCompensation/BenefitsSalary: Starting at $113,000 annuallyFLSA Status: ExemptBenefits Include:Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance403(b) retirement savings planProfessional coaching through BravelyGenerous paid time offPerformance-based merit increasesEmployee Assistance ProgramOpportunities for professional growth and developmentEqual Employment OpportunityGraham Windham is committed to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
