General Summary

The Resource Nurse serves as a clinical expert and mentor, offering guidance and support to nursing staff. This position involves stepping in for complex cases, admissions, or emergencies, focusing on real-time problem-solving and training rather than administrative duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide advanced patient care including IV insertions, lab draws, and emergency response.
• Monitor patients closely for early signs of deterioration using bedside assessments, vital signs, labs, telemetry, and clinical trends, initiating timely interventions and notifying providers as needed.
• Train and coach new nurses, offering leadership and advice on challenging situations while reinforcing evidence-based practices.
• Support bedside nurses in recognizing subtle changes in patient conditions and prioritizing interventions.
• Assist with staffing, patient assignments, and ensure smooth unit operations during busy periods or staffing shortages.
• Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, assist with policy implementation, and promote patient-centered care.
• Facilitate communication between frontline staff and clinical leadership to improve care transitions.
• Manage patient movement through care transitions, including admission assessments, stabilization, monitoring, and safe transfers with accurate documentation.
• Perform routine site care, dressing changes, and troubleshoot vascular access device complications.
• Adhere to patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling, and critical lab notifications.
• Maintain central lines and prevent surgical site infections according to policy.
• Communicate patient information effectively to physicians and team members to enhance outcomes.
• Delegate tasks appropriately while fostering teamwork and accountability.
• Cross-trained to serve as Nursing Supervisor and Patient Access Service nurse when needed.

Education

Graduation from an accredited nursing school is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience is required, with at least 2 years in critical care preferred.

Certification and Licenses

• Current RN license with Compact Licensure accepted.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
• American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
• American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
• Ultrasound IV course completion and competency.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role requires considerable mental concentration and physical activity including lifting up to 35 lbs., frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and body fluids is common. Physical discomfort is minimal.
