Job Title TJJD Juvenile Correctional Officer II / III / IV (Part Time) – Texas Juvenile Justice Department – Giddings, Texas. Job Overview Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Works to help youth achieve progress in learning and applying methods to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma and react in more socially appropriate ways. Uses appropriate intervention methods in response to behavioral issues that seeks to aid in learning and correcting behavior. Maintains a consistent effort to ensure safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger. Interacts and engages with youth in ways that both maintain appropriate structure and exercise understanding of brain development in youth with complex trauma. Responsibilities Facilitate youth rehabilitation, supervise youth, and coach personal development in accordance with individualized treatment plans. Engage in competency-based training in the techniques and capabilities needed to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma‑informed corrections. Hold youth accountable in ways that fit the level of behavior, seek to help youth learn socially acceptable responses and approaches. Use good judgment in determining when safety is at risk and higher levels of intervention are required. Help youth identify their responses to stress, fear, and other triggers and work with them to learn ways to increase emotional self‑regulation skills. Practice and model appropriate self‑regulation skills and remain calm during times of stress and crisis. Gain a basic knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and provide support in learning the skills needed to meet those goals. Coach youth on how to resolve conflict with other youth and staff as appropriate. Participate in the Youth Service Team and provide input into each youth’s treatment plan. Provide a predictable schedule for youth that is transparent and give warnings and prompts for all movements and transitions. Implement and monitor youth activities, programs, and behaviors on an individual and group basis to ensure healthy engagement. Observe and keep staff informed daily of significant behavioral and treatment-related conditions and events known about a youth. Provide services to potentially aggressive/combative youth and participate in follow‑up debriefing conversations. Maintain security in buildings, grounds, and other posts; intervene during emergencies or altercations to prevent escapes and protect safety. Conduct searches for contraband and health/safety hazards; perform room, property, and strip searches as required. Supervise assigned youth during all daily activities, manage movements between activities, conduct periodic headcounts, and ensure participation in required activities. Maintain privacy and follow all policies, regulations, and laws regarding youth records. Complete and maintain required records, files, and forms accurately and timely. Perform additional duties as assigned and in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures. Report safety hazards and correct hazards when possible. Complete required documentation for accident/injury within requested timeframes. Attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies. Travel up to 25% of the time and work more than 40 hours per week when required. Actively embody and support the Texas Model by demonstrating its core values in daily tasks and interactions. High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications College degree or coursework. Experience supervising or providing rehabilitation or treatment services to youth or adults in a treatment, correctional, or residential setting. Applicants must be able to pass a Criminal Background Check and meet other requirements listed under Minimum Qualifications. Applicants with the following will not be considered: Convicted or received deferred adjudication for any felony. Convicted or received deferred adjudication for domestic violence involving a family member. Convicted or received deferred adjudication for official oppression. Current requirement to register as a sex offender. Arrested for a disqualifying offense that was not expunged before the statute of limitations expired. Outstanding warrant. Applicants with other arrests, deferred adjudications, and convictions may be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis. Pre‑employment conditions require acceptable results from mandatory fingerprinting, criminal records check, driving record check, and a Fitness‑for‑Duty Assessment (physical and behavior evaluations). Requirements for continued employment include obtaining and maintaining certification in TJJD’s Use of Force techniques and in First Aid and CPR. Failure to maintain required certification will result in termination. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Physical demands include heavy lifting and carrying over 45 lbs, restraining combative youth, pushing, pulling, repeated bending, reaching above shoulder, prolonged standing and walking, twisting, kneeling, stooping, dual simultaneous grasping, and climbing ladders. Working conditions involve communication skills, vision, hearing, tactile discernment, color identification, depth perception, motor equipment operation, and ability to perform under stressful and emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively with youth to foster cooperation. Ability to plan and implement youth programs. Ability to facilitate group discussions and activities. Ability to set limits on youth behaviors in a consistent, firm, and fair manner. Ability to intervene and redirect behavior. Ability to respond to abusive language and behavior consistent with training instructions. Ability to remain alert and respond physically during emergencies. Ability to learn crisis intervention and emergency treatment procedures. Ability to maintain order and discipline. Ability to transport youth and travel as necessary. Ability to work a variety of shifts, weekends, holidays, and be on call. Ability to work more than 40 hours per week when required.
