Summary This position, located at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN, maintains and repairs electrical equipment/industrial systems and is assigned a variety of duties involving installation, modification, troubleshooting, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems. Responsibilities The Electrician performs a variety of maintenance and new construction tasks involved in maintaining station buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities for James H Quillen VAMC and its subordinate outlying facilities. This position includes responsibilities for both electrical and electronic and he/she would hold expertise/license/certifications to include skills in managing a variety of electrical current systems 1,5,20,110, 220, 460 and 13,200 volts AC and DC. Duties include but not limited to: The incumbent is responsible to perform a variety of work on various crews and tasks. He/she will perform periodic inspections of existing buildings and electrical systems to ensure patient and staff safety and hospital building code compliance. The incumbent must posses the ability and skills to interpret and apply the national electrical code, local codes and codes established by The Joint Commission to use formulas to calculate common properties. He/she is responsible to manage surveillance cameras, Velocity security system, cell phone communication relays, nurse call systems, station radio systems, programmable controllers, intercom system, television sets, station fire alarm system, electronic door operations, and other electronics components as required. install new devices and maintain knowledge of new circuits to enhance the operating ability of the system. install new circuit breaker panels, new circuits, wire, lights, underground cable, transformers, and conduit for telephone lines, etc. perform preventive maintenance inspections and follow-up work as required by current performance standards. perform major and minor maintenance and repairs while inspecting and requests work orders for time consuming repairs. provide technical advice and works with other engineering Shop Personnel in solving problems that arise in the electrical components of general hospital equipment. maintain awareness of costs involved during repair and maintenance procedures and strives to minimize such costs for the betterment of the patients and the agency. assist in planning, design, and detailing of new electrical installations or expansions of present systems. prepare requisitions and replacement parts, as assigned, and takes notes of delivered items when received. repair industrial machine controls and indicators, and does performance evaluation of electrical equipment and related devices. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 6:45am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD60225A Physical Requirements: Frequently lifts and carries, unassisted, items weighing up to 40 pounds. Sometimes lifts and carries items weighing more than 50 pounds properly with assistance from other workers or lifting devices. Frequently stands, walks, bends, crouches, reaches and stoops. Climbs and works in high places as well as in underground tunnels. Some electronics work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Electrical work is sometimes accomplished from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach places. Occasionally works in tiring, tight and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Ability to Use Electrical Drawings Knowledge of Electrical Equipment Theory and Instruments (Electrical, Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices Troubleshooting (Electrical) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities. The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
