Field Service Technician II

Description The Field Service Technician II independently performs standard maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting activities on electrical power distribution and critical power systems. This role assumes ownership of assigned scopes, supports commissioning and corrective work, leads portions of job execution, and mentors apprentices and less experienced technicians. The technician is a fully qualified field resource capable of delivering consistent customer support without day-to-day supervision. Key Responsibilities Maintenance & Testing Independently perform preventive maintenance and testing on LV and MV switchgear, breakers, ATS, RPPs, and PDUs. Execute insulation resistance, continuity, contact resistance, and basic functional testing with minimal supervision. Perform breaker removal, inspection, and reinstallation under established procedures. Support generator maintenance, load bank testing, and operational checks. Transformers — Maintenance & Field Testing Independently perform preventive maintenance and field testing on dry‑type, cast‑coil, pad‑mount, unit‑substation and liquid‑filled transformers up to medium voltage. Perform and interpret insulation resistance, transformer turns ratio (TTR), winding resistance, and excitation current tests. Perform oil sampling for dissolved gas analysis (DGA), moisture, and dielectric strength; interpret routine lab results and flag exceptions for engineering review. Perform de‑energized tap changes and verify no‑load tap changer operation. Inspect and service load tap changer (LTC) mechanisms and controls under established procedures. Verify transformer grounding and perform ground resistance testing. Verify cooling system operation (fans, oil pumps, RTDs and temperature control circuits) and alarm and trip signaling. Support oil processing activities including filtration, dress and fill, and regasketing. Troubleshoot common transformer issues including overheating, oil leaks, gauge and alarm faults, and cooling system failures. Troubleshooting & Commissioning Support Read and interpret one‑line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams to support troubleshooting. Troubleshoot common electrical, mechanical, and control issues; elevate complex faults to the Field Service Engineer or Sr. Field Service Engineer. Support commissioning activities including pre‑energization checks, point‑to‑point verification, and functional testing. Assist with control wiring checks, interlock verification, and basic communication diagnostics. Assist with protection relay testing and secondary injection under the direction of a Field Service Engineer or Sr. Field Service Engineer. Support verification of relay settings and functional checks of protection and control circuits. Safety & Compliance Comply with all safety requirements including LOTO, arc‑flash, energized work restrictions, job hazard analysis, and permits. Participate in and contribute to on‑site safety briefings and follow safe work practices at all times. Ensure work complies with applicable codes and standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA) and customer site‑specific requirements. Mentorship & Job Leadership Lead portions of job execution and oversee apprentices and Level 2 technicians on assigned tasks. Share best practices and provide on‑the‑job training to less experienced team members. Customer & Documentation Communicate progress and findings clearly to lead technicians, project managers, and customers as needed. Document service activities, complete test records, and maintain accurate punch lists and field reports. Coordinate with project managers and supply chain on parts and material needs. Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED required; technical school, military electrical training, or Associate’s degree a plus. 5–8 years of relevant field service experience with LV/MV switchgear, breakers, ATS, generators, or related electrical equipment. Working knowledge of electrical safety practices including LOTO and arc‑flash risk controls. Proven ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and one‑line diagrams. Hands‑on experience performing transformer field testing (insulation resistance, TTR, winding resistance) and oil sampling. Ability to write clear field reports and maintain accurate test documentation. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, maintained throughout employment; ability to travel as required, sometimes on short notice. Must be at least 21 years of age to be assigned and operate a company-provided service vehicle. Must be able and willing to obtain Department of Transportation (DOT) non-CDL qualification, including a current DOT medical card where required for towing test trailers or oil‑processing equipment, and comply with applicable DOT regulatory requirements. Preferred OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. Completion of Forgent Power TQP Level 3. Manufacturer/OEM training on switchgear, breakers, ATS, or generator platforms. Familiarity with major OEMs (e.g., Eaton, ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, GE, Schneider, Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler). Exposure to protection relay platforms (e.g., SEL, GE/Multilin, Siemens SIPROTEC) and relay configuration software. Exposure to control platforms (SEL, ComAp, Woodward) or PLCs. Hands‑on use of relay test sets (e.g., Omicron, Doble) in a supporting role. Experience with load tap changer inspection and oil processing (filtration, dress and fill, regasketing). Working knowledge of IEEE C57 series transformer testing practices. Insulation resistance testers (e.g., Megger) and contact resistance meters. Breaker test sets and relay test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble) in a supporting role. Transformer test sets — turns ratio (TTR), winding resistance, and excitation current (e.g., Megger, Doble). Oil sampling and handling equipment; ground resistance testers. Torque tools, mechanical gauges, and standard hand and power tools. Mobile field service applications and document control/reporting systems. Working Conditions & Travel Primarily field‑based at customer facilities including industrial plants, utilities, data centers, commercial facilities, and substations. Travel typically 50–80% depending on region and workload; may include nights, weekends, and emergency call‑outs on short notice. Participation in the regional on‑call rotation is required. On‑call periods include nights, weekends, and holidays, and require the ability to respond to emergency call‑outs. Project assignments may be long‑duration, typically ranging from several weeks to 12+ months depending on scope and schedule. Assignments outside the home region are typically worked on a field rotation of three consecutive weeks on site followed by one week in the home office. Work may be performed in confined spaces, on elevated platforms, in hot/cold environments, and around rotating machinery and energized equipment in accordance with safety rules. Must be able to wear required PPE including arc‑rated clothing, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and fall protection as needed. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and move test equipment and tools. Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb ladders and stairs, and work at heights for extended periods. Ability to differentiate conductor colors and indicator states and to read instruments and displays. Ability to handle transformer test leads, oil hoses, and oil‑handling equipment, including lifting up to 75 lbs (34 kg) with assistance.
