Financial Analyst

Position Summary

The Financial Analyst leads the analysis and delivery of patient-level clinical and financial information to support operational, financial, and strategic decision-making across the medical center or health system. Develops case-based operating budgets, patient-volume forecasts, utilization projections, and gross-revenue estimates. Oversees service-line profitability reporting, cost-accounting activities, and integration of clinical and financial data within a patient-centered decision-support repository. Establishes performance measures and benchmarks business operations against healthcare industry best practices and internal objectives. Applies advanced knowledge of healthcare decision support, financial analytics, and industry standards to lead complex, high-impact projects.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supports the financial management of external partnerships by providing financial reporting, planning, analysis, and presentations to UCSF leadership and joint governance boards.
• Partners with Accounting to ensure timely and accurate monthly financial statements, supporting analyses, annual operating budgets, partner payments, and board materials.
• Collaborates with Revenue Cycle, Contracting, and Physician Compensation teams to forecast, monitor, and evaluate performance against contractual requirements, budget targets, and organizational expectations.
• Identifies, investigates, and supports resolution of financial and operational variances in collaboration with joint boards, advisory committees, and internal stakeholders.
• Prepares monthly partnership profit-and-loss statements, including administrative services expenses, payment calculations, reconciliations, and adjustments to align estimated payments with actual partner liabilities.
• Collects, analyzes, and reports physician productivity data, including work relative value units (wRVUs), FTE, and other relevant performance metrics.
• Prepares physician payroll summaries to support accurate accounting of professional services agreement expenses.
• Calculates physician compensation and periodic incentive payments in accordance with employment agreements; maintains accurate, auditable compensation models and supporting documentation.
• Develops financial pro formas for physician compensation, benefits, new or existing physician practices, and other strategic initiatives.
• Creates and enhances scalable monthly reporting, financial dashboards, performance measures, and analytical tools for internal business partners.
• Leads or supports implementation of financial systems, reporting tools, and process improvements.
• Develops multi-year operating and capital budgets, provides budget recommendations, and partners with department leaders to explain variances and resolve financial or procedural issues.
• Performs complex financial, statistical, and ad hoc analyses to support leadership decision-making and partner collaboration.
• Designs or improves analytical methods, databases, reporting structures, and performance-measurement approaches.
• Supports data modeling, data flow design, and secure operational frameworks for reliable delivery of financial and business intelligence.
• Prepares monthly variance analyses and narrative commentary for leadership review.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Five or more years of progressively responsible financial planning, analysis, reporting, decision support, or healthcare finance experience, including at least two years in a healthcare, physician practice, medical center, or health system environment.
• Strong knowledge of healthcare finance, clinical and operational planning, budget development, financial data management, service-line or partnership profitability, and business development analysis.
• Demonstrated experience preparing complex financial analyses, forecasts, pro formas, budgets, variance reports, and performance reporting that inform executive and operational decision-making.
• Advanced knowledge of decision-support methodologies, business statistics, quantitative analysis, data modeling, relational databases, performance measurement, and profitability analysis.
• Ability to synthesize complex clinical, operational, and financial data into clear, accurate, and actionable insights, recommendations, and executive-level presentations.
• Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to perform complex queries, assess data integrity, identify trends and variances, and develop practical solutions to business issues.
• Strong project-management and organizational skills, with the ability to independently prioritize competing work, manage ambiguity, anticipate risks or bottlenecks, and deliver high-quality work on deadline.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects, guide cross-functional stakeholders, and build productive relationships with leaders, finance teams, clinical and operational partners, and external collaborators.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate sophisticated financial and technical information clearly and concisely to varied audiences.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial reporting, analytical, and business-intelligence tools. Experience with SQL and relational databases required; experience with Tableau, Essbase, Cognos, enterprise data warehouses, or comparable reporting platforms preferred.
• Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive financial, compensation, and partnership information with confidentiality.
