Executive Director, Immunology Discovery

Merck seeks an Executive Director to lead immunology discovery research at its San Diego R&D site, focusing on gastroenterology, dermatology, and rheumatology therapeutics. The role involves strategic pipeline management, team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration to advance drug candidates from target identification through commercialization.
Responsibilities
- Establish vision and strategy for immunology team to deliver drug discovery projects impacting patient health
- Manage resources, priorities, and investments aligned with broader immunology discovery strategy
- Oversee early and late-stage discovery programs including FIH and POC clinical studies
- Develop talent and foster high-performance collaborative culture within teams
- Identify and evaluate external business development opportunities complementing internal programs
Requirements
- Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in immunology, pharmaceutical sciences, or related field
- Minimum 15 years immunology drug discovery experience across all development stages
- At least 5 years direct management of multiple scientific teams with proven leadership abilities
- Knowledge of immune-mediated diseases and competitive landscape in gastroenterology, rheumatology, dermatology
- Experience identifying, evaluating, and integrating external business development and academic partnerships
- Portfolio management, prioritization, and decision-making skills
- Strong external profile demonstrated through publications and conference presentations
