Job Title: Superintendent – Commercial Construction

Reports To:  Project Manager or President

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Summary:  Supervises and coordinates activities of construction crew and manages the daily work schedule by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

1.    Establishes and delegates a daily work schedule for work crews.*

2.    Monitors, assists, and adheres to daily work schedule.*

3.    Immediately responds to problems, accidents or emergencies that occur.*

4.    Monitors work area by performing visual inspection and identification of problems or potential problems.*

5.    Maintains an adequate inventory of tools and supplies, notifies management of required supplies, and “red tags” tools in need of repair.*

6.    Enforces company regulations as required.*

7.    Maintains working knowledge of company policy and procedures including safety procedures.*

8.    Establish pre-task plan and identify hazards associated with the job site.*

9.    Holds employees and sub-contractors accountable to proper safety procedures.*

10.  Participates on company’s Safety Committee.*

11.  Resolves and reports all job site problems and safety issues to management as needed.*

12.  Represent employer as designated competent employee at the job site.*

13.  Refers customer related issues and inquiries to general superintendent when needed.*

14.  Maintains schedules, attendance and basic personnel information for work crews.*

15.  Determines production levels to approve overtime requirements as needed.*

16. Oversees and trains new employees on company procedures and safety regulations.*

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid Driver’s license - must meet insurance underwriting requirements

Travel:

This position requires frequent out of town daytrips and extended periods of overnight travel depending on project requirements.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises two or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; monitoring subcontractors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, wet or humid conditions (non-weather), cold temperatures, confined spaces, working at heights, and will encounter electrical situations that will require lock-out and tag-out procedures. 

Employee will be required to recognize environments that pose risk to health and safety and implement proper procedures for mitigation.  For example: exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations.

Expected noise level in the work environment can exceed 80 decibels.
