Immigration Attorney

Job Synopsis

The Immigration Attorney will be part of MCC South Florida Immigration Program (MCCSFIP) that provides immigration services to our constituency churches, as well as to other communities in the area. This is a 0.6 FTE (24-hour work week) position. Immigration services will consist of, but not be limited to providing immigration counseling, filling out immigration documents, maintaining accurate confidential files, representing clients in court, and occasionally giving presentations on immigration law/services of the program to our constituent congregations.

• Law degree and active license to practice law required
• A minimum of three years' experience (including law school clinical experience) with immigration law and procedures
• Excellent legal skills and understanding of movement lawyering principles.
• Bilingual English/Spanish required.
• Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking.
• Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload.
• Ability to build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, the public and congregations.
• Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities
• Ability to organize, plan and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with software applications in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Word and Immigration Docketwise.

Key Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

90% Immigration Legal Representation and Documentation,

10% Community Partners and Education

Immigration Legal Representation and Documentation- 90%

• Provide representation to unrepresented immigrant and detainees in immigration court.
• Provide consultation to inform clients about the requirements related to applying for various immigration status
• Assists clients with applications for these immigration-related benefits
• Fill out application, provided legal immigration consultation and counseling
• Participate in meetings with Immigration Legal Subcommittee where Department of Homeland Security representatives, ZMI, EOIR and CBP participate in updates issues.
• Monitor new Immigration law data by the government for use in our office and reports.
• In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, work to choose and accept cases

Community Partner and Education 10%

• Participate in MCCSFIP staff meetings and case reviews.
• Attend EC meetings as needed.

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis.

Supervision: This position does not supervise anyone

Travel expectations: Minimal local travel and East Coast regional gathering or two per year

Physical Activity/Demands:

• Constantly remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.

• Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

• Constantly assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.

• This position is not regularly exposed to any adverse environmental conditions.
