Firefighter

Job Overview An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of firefighting tasks, including fire suppression, emergency medical care, search and rescue, and general housekeeping. Nature Of Work Positions in this class require physically demanding work involving fire suppression and emergency medical care. Work is frequently performed under hazardous conditions; employees must react quickly, exercise independent judgment, and participate in training or station drills to maintain proficiency. Work is performed on a 24-hour shift, including weekends and holidays. Examples of Duties Search structures for trapped or injured persons; obtain information on the source, extent or spread of the fire, and determine structural stability and hazards; remove burning objects; ventilate structures with hand and power tools; climb ladders; pull hose from truck, connect and operate hose or assist a fellow firefighter; extricate victims from damaged vehicles; administer first aid; serve as a driver engineer when required; salvage property; restore order and security of damaged structures. Perform CPR and other emergency medical procedures; take vital signs and record them; prepare individuals for transport. Participate in area surveys and maintain records. Participate in station drills and general housekeeping. Perform related work as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Working knowledge of firefighting and rescue methods, first aid and CPR, firefighting terminology, characteristics of fire, standard firefighting and rescue tools, search and rescue equipment, street system and city layout. Ability to perform first aid or CPR; communicate orally, in writing and via hand signals; function under stressful conditions; lift, carry and maneuver equipment; perform work requiring physical exertion; cooperate with all people; operate firefighting and rescue equipment. Skill in use and care of all pertinent hand tools and equipment. Physical Requirements Ability to lift over 60 lbs., mostly standing and walking; work indoors and outdoors; frequent use of computer, typing and monitor viewing. Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age; lawful to work in the US; possess a high school diploma or equivalency; current CPAT and FireTEAM from the National Testing Network; possess a valid driver’s license with Florida license upon hire; current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance; current State of Florida or National Registry EMT‑Basic or Paramedic certificate; current CPR or ACLS card; birth certificate; current 7-year driving history (within last 30 days). Application Process Complete the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) and the FireTEAM assessment. Submit the online employment application and ensure all sections are completed. Submit supporting documents, including birth certificate, high school diploma, valid driver’s license, State of Florida Firefighter Certificate, EMT / Paramedic certificate, CPR / ACLS card, CPAT and FireTEAM results, and current 7-year driving history. Provide additional documents for veteran or college diploma applicants if applicable. Other Requirements A non-user of tobacco or nicotine products for at least one year before application and during employment. Must undergo background investigation, driving record check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam with drug testing. Paramedic Certification Requirement Obtain Florida Paramedic Certification within three years of employment; failure to maintain active enrollment within 24 months may result in termination.
