Heavy Duty Transmission Mechanic
Essential Functions for the Position:
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Shops, but may receive tasks from the Assistant Superintendent and Lead Mechanic, the individual performs diagnostic function tests (dynamometer [dyno]), failure analysis and specification rebuilding consistent with industry time and quality standards on all transmissions, sub-assemblies, axle differentials and other related drive train components associated with all current and future fleets.
Familiar with all phases of troubleshooting, using current diagnostic equipment and methods.
Able to troubleshoot and diagnose transmission, driveline components, electrical and/or electronic systems found on modern transmissions, hydraulic systems and their function.
Special Knowledge & Skills:
- Familiar with current overhaul procedures and production-efficient methods for heavy-duty transmission repair, including failure analysis, operational troubleshooting and precision measuring with dial indicators, micrometers and test gauges.
- Must be able to read and understand technical publications, material safety data publications, blueprints and operational schematics related to transit industry transmissions, including torque flow, hydraulic flow, electrical and pneumatic controls and related diagnostic procedures.
- Knowledge of and familiar with current safety equipment and procedures.
Education, Training & Experience:
- High school or trade school graduate. May substitute [2] years' practical working experience for trade school.
- Minimum of six (6) years' practical working experience in the heavy-duty vehicle field, including at least four (4) years' experience with power and drive trains, medium/heavy-duty transmissions to include, but are not limited to, Allison, Voith, Ford models 4R100, 5R100W and 5R110W transmissions.

- Have excellent work performance and attendance records.
- Pass Company-administered written and oral examinations.
- Meet or be able to meet all present and future license and certification requirements as may be required by OTS, the City, State or Federal governments.
- Able to meet standard physical requirements and pass Company-sponsored medical examination and drug screening.
- Willing and able to work various shifts, overtime as directed, holiday-duty as required, and assume days-off as assigned.
