Traffic Signal Inspector

The Department of Transportation Services (DTS), Traffic Signal and Technology Division, is looking for a reliable Traffic Signal Inspector. This full-time, permanent role in Honolulu, involves checking traffic signal and camera construction to ensure it meets required standards, identifying and correcting construction problems, coordinating signal activation and changeovers, and estimating completed work and repair costs.

What You Will Do

• Inspect construction work for compliance with roadway, sidewalk, electrical, environmental, and street usage standards to ensure all work meets City, State, and Federal requirements.
• Ensure safe traffic control and pedestrian protection by evaluating work zones, coning, signing, and safeguards, and require corrections to maintain safe travel conditions.
• Verify electrical installations meet code by inspecting traffic signal conduits, cables, fiber optics, power sources, transformers, and meters in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Review and interpret traffic signal plans by reading complex drawings and schematics, locating existing underground utilities, and approving or modifying contractor signal layouts.
• Correct deficiencies and enforce compliance by identifying faulty workmanship, improper materials or methods, and stopping construction work until standards are met.
• Document work and manage costs by preparing daily and monthly inspection reports, estimating completed work for payment, identifying cost impacts, and reporting violations or discrepancies to supervisors.
• Perform other related duties as needed.

Special Working Conditions

• Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
• May encounter construction site hazards and traffic safety risks while performing inspections.
• Must be able to perform shift work during emergency events or EOC activation.
• May be required to work weekends and holidays as required.
• This role is assigned to service the Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC).
• May be required to complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check in accordance with HRS 846-2.7 (b)(37).
