Registered Nurse

Provides professional nursing care to inmates or consumers housed in a state-operated facility. Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients. Makes nursing rounds and takes and records vital signs. Prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatment plans. Monitors patients, providing immediate medical attention in emergencies. If assigned, schedules, assigns, and reviews work of lower-level staff. Participates in staff development and education. Reviews care plans written by staff and trains new employees. Responsible for all health care of bedridden patients. Makes rounds, evaluates care needed, and develops care plans. Administers medication, including narcotics, and renders direct nursing care. Performs specialized procedures, including IV therapy and wound care. Organizes and oversees emergency response teams. Directs healthcare staff assigned to the area and leads in the absence of supervisory nursing staff. Assists physicians in giving diagnostic health evaluations. Performs clerical tasks, charts and records medications and treatments. Completes required reports and maintains an inventory of controlled substances. Arranges for medical examinations and outpatient clinic appointments. Serves as a liaison within the organization and attends meetings. May serve as an instructor or leader in problem-solving groups.
