Sr Staff Mechanical Engineer

Twist Bioscience seeks a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to design and develop next-generation automated laboratory instruments. The role involves full lifecycle ownership from concept through production, with primary work in Wilsonville, OR and occasional travel to company and vendor sites.

Responsibilities

• Design integrated lab instruments using SolidWorks covering liquid handling, robotics, and imaging subsystems
• Specify all hardware components and manage vendor/contract manufacturer relationships as technical lead
• Develop tolerance analyses, design fixtures, and create complete documentation including models, drawings, and BOMs
• Execute and support factory and site acceptance testing with cross-functional teams
• Build, debug, calibrate, and verify instruments; provide updates for obsolete parts and design evolution

Requirements

• 12+ years as Senior Mechanical Engineer with BS in mechanical engineering, or 8+ years with graduate degree
• Expert-level SolidWorks proficiency with proven end-to-end design delivery and fabrication-ready documentation
• Lead mechanical engineer on at least 2 benchtop or larger production instruments
• Strong robotics, mechatronics, and electronic device specification experience
• Extensive fluidics system design including custom manifolds, pumps, valves, sensors, and regulators
• CAD PDM system management and system integration/testing experience
• Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills
