Transportation Authority Internship Program The Transportation Authority has paid internship positions for students who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and excited about making a meaningful contribution to San Francisco's transportation system. Due to the small size of our agency and our dedication to learning from each other, interns will have the opportunity to interact with professionals at all levels within the Transportation Authority, from your peers to the senior managers. Our staff will work with each intern to develop a program that is tailored to individual strengths and interests, as well as the current needs of our teams. Internships can be combined with general research opportunities or research towards a thesis. Data And Forecasting Internship Overview The Data and Forecasting team develops, maintains, and applies SF-CHAMP, an activity-based travel demand model to support project evaluation and the development of San Francisco's long range transportation plan. The team also manages data initiatives to monitor the performance of transportation networks and to support planning studies and projects. The team is planning to advance a major model update (implementing ActivitySim in the SF-CHAMP model), develop and expand dashboards to expand staff's access to model outputs and other data, and supporting planning studies and policy work. A successful Data and Forecasting intern should have an interest in using models and data to analyze transportation issues and make meaningful contributions to San Francisco's transportation system. Employee Type: Intern/Temporary Employee Availability: Interns should be available to work at least 20 hours per week during regular business hours, for at least a 12-week period. Preference will be given to applicants who are available full time (40 hours per week) for at least 6 months. Please note availability in cover letter. Compensation Range: $25 - $32 per hour (depending on experience) Minimum Qualifications Strong interest in travel forecasting and urban transportation planning is required. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations is required. Proficiency with computer programming, mapping and spatial analysis (e.g. using ArcGIS), database management, statistical analysis, and experience with transportation planning and analysis software is desired. At least one semester in a relevant graduate level discipline (e.g. transportation planning, urban planning, civil engineering) is desired, but experience or education in other fields that use similar methods (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science) and a strong motivation to learn about and contribute to data-driven transportation planning may be substituted for relevant graduate coursework. Skills And Abilities Standard transportation planning principles, methods, and processes; basic research methods, survey design, and database management techniques; ability to interpret data using appropriate statistical methods; familiarity with basic travel demand modeling and traffic engineering principles. Training And Experience Prospective interns should have at least completed a bachelor's degree. Preferred candidates will have completed at least one semester in a relevant master's degree program (e.g. transportation planning, urban planning, civil engineering). Candidates with only a bachelor's degree will be considered if they have transportation planning experience.
