Position CobbFendley is seeking an experienced Utility Design Designer in our Houston location. Requirements Level Intermediate – Developing skills with some practical experience; able to perform tasks with assistance. 5+ years of design experience. Knowledge of engineering design principles, applicable codes and standards, and established design practices used in the planning and development of projects. Skills in using engineering design and drafting software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, etc.) to develop, modify, and coordinate engineering designs, drawings, and technical deliverables. Ability to analyze data, apply design criteria, and use standard office and engineering software to produce accurate design documentation and support project completion. Responsibilities Design + Analysis: Support Project Managers and Project Engineers with design tasks, demonstrating increased independence in executing assigned work. Utilize engineering and drafting software to develop plan, profile, cross‑section, and utility drawings aligned with project requirements. Interpret survey data, utility records, specifications, and engineering plans to develop and refine design base files. Translate design concepts, sketches, and engineering direction into coordinated construction drawings. Incorporate redlines and review comments and recognize recurring design standards. Perform basic engineering calculations, including elevations, grades, utility design elements, and quantities. Identify potential design conflicts, discrepancies, or constructability concerns and elevate or assist in resolution. Support collection of field data or utility record information if applicable. Compliance + Quality: Apply company QA/QC processes and procedures in the preparation of design deliverables; perform self‑checks on drawings and data for accuracy, completeness and consistency; maintain organized and accurate project files and documentation. Communication + Collaboration: Work with supervisor, Project Manager, and various internal personnel to complete assignments; coordinate with project teams, including Engineers, designers, and other disciplines, to support design integration. Training, Learning + Advancement: Learn and apply company drafting standards, workflows, and design tools; participate in training, learning and advancement opportunities, may assist with development of others in a mentorship role and/or developing tools and resources. Client + Internal Satisfaction: Deliver accurate, timely, and coordinated design work that supports project schedules and objectives; apply client standards and project requirements with growing consistency and understanding. Technical: Design placement of new cable fiber and copper; design the relocation of cables, manholes, handholes; approved design access to the AT&T’s Aramis system required; understanding of AT&T’s OPTI prints is a plus; understanding of AT&T’s BST CAD prints is a plus; experience in reading/understanding civil plans is a plus; perform site visits, fielding, and assist with permitting as needed; meetings with clients and agencies (city, state, county, Department of Transportation); perform independent research and adapt to changing priorities. Physical & Cognitive Requirements Most work is performed in a professional office environment. Some trips to client offices and outdoor environments for observations will be required. Seated and standing position; extended periods of sitting and standing in an upright position at a workstation. Mobility; movement within the office and job sites, including navigating between floors, workstations, and outdoor environments with potential for uneven surfaces. Neck movement: forward flexion, extension, or lateral rotation of the head and neck while using multiple computer screens. Repetitive motion: repetitive finger movements for operating a computer mouse and typing on a keyboard. Arm movement: extending hands and arms in various directions, such as overhead, below the waist, forward, or laterally. Object handling: raising or lowering objects from one level to another and transporting objects by holding them in the hands, arms, or over the shoulder. Cognitive requirements: selective attention, oral comprehension, oral expression, speech recognition, speech clarity, written comprehension, written expression, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, number facility, information ordering, category flexibility, flexibility of closure, fluency of ideas, and originality. Office conditions: extensive use of electronic devices such as computers, printers, copiers, scanners, plotters, and telephones; tasks may involve the use of cutting tools and equipment like rotary paper cutters and plotting devices. Outdoor conditions: walking and climbing on uneven surfaces, confined spaces, and exposure to extreme weather conditions (heat and freezing temperatures); potential exposure to high noise levels and various allergens, including poison ivy, sumac, dust, pollen, and cedar; potential exposure to wildlife hazards such as animals, insects, and plants. Safety and equipment use: regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE); use of hand and power tools. Driving and vehicle use: may involve driving large pick‑up trucks with attached trailers, potentially operating watercraft, and for extended periods of time. Work Schedule This is a full‑time position, generally 40 hours per week, however, hours may fluctuate depending on department needs including the use of overtime. CobbFendley’s standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM CST. Generally, employees receive a 1‑hour unpaid lunch break free of duty. Please note, operating hours and lunch hours may differ based on project workload, primarily for field staff.
