Position Summary
Environmental Services Associates are responsible for performing essential cleaning and sanitizing across the ANTHC operations to include Alaska Native Medical Center accredited campus, business offices, and Patient Lodging. This position contributes directly to patient and staff safety by ensuring the all ANTHC facilities remain presentable and clean. This position may work in clinical, administrative, and public areas and are expected to follow infection prevention protocols, handle regulated waste, and support the organization’s operational readiness. Higher-level associates may perform tasks in surgical environments and perform lead duties during their assigned shifts.
Position Responsibilities - All
With limited supervision follows infection prevention and department procedures, performs daily cleaning and disinfection of assigned areas, including patient rooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, construction areas and public spaces.
Support terminal cleaning for discharged patients, including contact precaution rooms.
Follow hospital protocols for high-touch surfaces, waste removal, and restocking supplies.
Safely handle and transport regulated medical waste and soiled linen.
Use and maintain cleaning tools, carts, and PPE according to safety standards.
Respond to calls for service requests professionally and efficiently.
Document completed tasks using checklists and/or digital logs.
Demonstrate commitment to safety, teamwork, and service excellence.
Participate in required department and organizational training.
Support performance improvement initiatives through collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.
Restock EVS janitor closets and supply carts as needed.
Assist with spill response, and minor chemical handling.
Distribute linen to clinical departments and document accurately in linen tracking software.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE LEVEL II
Able to perform all duties of a level I.
Demonstrates ability to perform more complex cleaning and disinfection tasks in specialty care areas.
Serves as a mentor for Level I associates, demonstrating proper cleaning techniques.
Demonstrates ability to effectively manage time.
Knowledge of basic floor care equipment and linen distribution.
With minimal supervision, perform OR turnovers and terminal cleanings following all infection prevention requirements to maintain an aseptic environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE LEVEL III
Mentor and coach Level I and II associates on techniques, procedures, and safety expectations.
Able to perform all duties of a level I and II.
Advanced knowledge of floor care equipment.
Without supervision, perform OR turnovers and terminal cleanings following all infection prevention requirements to maintain an aseptic environment.
Provide feedback to Shift Supervisors on training needs, equipment needs or workflow improvements.
Assist with onboarding and orientation of new EVS team members.
Restock surgical suites with necessary supplies, equipment, and sterile items.
When cleaning in the OR, set up required equipment (e.g., suction, cautery units) according to case needs.
When cleaning in the OR, ensure all OR tables, lights, and equipment are positioned and functioning properly for the next procedure.
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE LEVEL IV
Mentor and coach Level I, II and III associates on techniques, procedures, equipment, and safety expectations.
Able to perform all duties of levels I, II and III.
Able to perform cycle cleaning with appropriate floorcare equipment.
In the absence of shift supervisor, able to provide operational direction to all lower level EVS associates and ensure shift documentation is complete.
Work closely with interdisciplinary teams such as nursing, surgical technologists, and anesthesia to ensure areas meet expectation and operational needs.
Assist with safe transport and positioning of equipment and devices when required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES – All
Follows verbal and written instructions accurately.
Demonstrates basic cleaning techniques and safety awareness.
Uses PPE and cleaning tools with limited supervision.
Works cooperatively as part of a team.
Willingness to learn and accept feedback.
Level II
Applies infection control and isolation protocols independently.
Operates cleaning equipment and handles chemicals safely.
Communicate effectively with peers and clinical staff.
Provides guidance to less experienced technicians.
Maintains consistent work quality with minimal supervision.
Level III
Demonstrates mentorship and peer coaching ability
Demonstrates ability to independently prioritize and assign tasks effectively
Solves routine EVS issues using experience and judgment
Collaborates across departments and supports training of new hires
Level IV
Knowledge of Operating Room equipment.
Advanced knowledge of floor care equipment to include basic troubleshooting.
Ability to set up for next cases in the OR.
Ability to lead turnover teams and ensure compliance with quality standards.
Models’ best practices in infection prevention and equipment use.

Minimum Experience Qualification
Level I: Non - supervisory - Zero (0) year of work experience.
Level II: Non – supervisory – two (2) years of work experience, one (1) of which was consecutive in a healthcare setting.
Level III: Non – supervisory - Three (3) years of work experience, two (1) of which are consecutive in a healthcare setting.
Level IV: Non – supervisory - Four (4) years of work experience, two (2) of which are consecutive in a healthcare setting
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Level IV: Completion of Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician (CHEST), Certified Surgical Cleaning Technician (CSCT) or equivalent certification.
Preferred Education Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Experience Qualification
Non - supervisory - Four (4) years of work experience, two (2) of which are in a healthcare environment.
Preferred Certification Qualification
AHE Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician (CHEST) or equivalent certification.
Additional Requirements
