Assistant Project Engineer II ( Site Civil)

Summary Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects within area of assigned responsibility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. This is a transitional position for someone with the required field experience and/or education to gain project engineering experience in a supervised manner prior to advancing into Project Engineer role. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Design major portions of an assigned project Solve complex problems and calculations, using engineering formulas and skills Evaluate research by others and write reports Assist the Project Engineer in the preparation of proposal estimates of time and expenses required to complete the project Assist the Project Engineer in scheduling staffing requirements for field projects Assist the Project Engineer in supervising and instructing field personnel as needed Plan and implement engineering programs, including defining the project philosophy, activities, milestones, and staff requirements, per customer requirements Develop and maintain a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project Provide reports on the status of project milestones and adjust schedules accordingly Control expenditures within limitations of project budget Identify project staffing requirements and coordinate staffing with supporting organization managers Coordinate preparation and delivery of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages Assign and oversee project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems Direct integration of technical activities Evaluate and present changes for design, specifications, drawing releases, reports, etc. to the Project Engineer and/or Project manager for approval Prepare interim and completion project reports Interface with customers to provide project status reports and ensure customer needs are met Provide status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management Review project proposal or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project Supervise field work and perform field work when needed Establish work plan and staffing for each phase of project and arrange for recruitment or assignment of project personnel Confere with project staff to outline workplan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority Direct and coordinate activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget Supervise project personnel and oversee their daily activities to ensure they are correct and complete Review status reports prepared by project personnel and modify schedules or plans as required Prepare project reports for management, client, or others Confere with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems Coordinate project activities with government regulatory or other governmental agencies Identify the potential for new projects and seek opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis Travel 25% of the time, which may be out of state Supervisory Responsibilities This job has some supervisory responsibilities. Education and/or Experience: A minimum of 5–8 years of field and/or related experience where a PE license counts towards that related experience, a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and demonstrates ability to meet the requirements of the job as set forth in this description. Previous construction experience is preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred or the ability to become licensed within 6 months of being in this position. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification, Registered Professional Engineer (PE) preferred or the ability to become licensed within 6 months of being in this position, valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to access job sites. Language Skills: Proficient in communicating both verbal and written in English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills: Proficient or familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, NitroPro, GSLOPE, KeyWall, Rocscience, MS Word, Excel, Adobe. Tools/Equipment: Ability to use tools such as a lump hammer, shovel, hand auger, Nuclear Density Gauge. Physical Demands Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear; lift and/or move under 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Work Environment Majority of work conducted in an office setting. Approximately 25% conducted outdoors, walking frequently on uneven hard and soft ground/terrain in all types of weather conditions (cold, hot, rain, snow, ice, etc.). Appropriate clothing for outdoor work and safety equipment required while working in the field.
