Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service is a small, academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education transfer high school designed to re-engage students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school. BCS is directly responsible for the administration of the school’s Learning to Work (LTW) program, which enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and paid internships.
Job Summary: The Assistant Director will provide leadership, supervision, and program coordination in support of a transfer high school serving over-age and under-credited students. Working in close partnership with the Program Director, school staff, and community partners, the Assistant Director will oversee student intake, counseling services, attendance outreach, and youth development programming. This position requires a strong commitment to equity, student advocacy, and creative problem-solving to help students overcome barriers to academic success and post-secondary readiness.
As the Assistant Director, you will foster a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment that promotes student engagement, resilience, and overall well-being. Through strong relationship-building with students, families, school staff, and community partners, you will ensure that each student receives tailored support aligned with their unique needs. This role is vital to promoting student growth, academic achievement, and long-term success.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct support to the Program Director in staff management, development, and oversight of the LTW internship program, ensuring high-quality program delivery
Motivate staff to create a positive, welcoming environment for students.
Ensure adherence to all program policies and protocols in collaboration with the Program Director.
Work closely with the Program Director and School Principal to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
Provide training, coaching, and professional development to team members, including interns.
Provide direct counseling to students and families to improve communication and address challenges impacting school performance, supporting their academic, career, and personal goals through individual and group sessions
Facilitate mediations and conflict resolution between students.
Manage crisis interventions, including mental health and trauma-related situations, in collaboration with counseling staff.
Review all documentation related to the program's progress for accuracy, completeness, and clarity.
Participate in administrative and staff meetings as requested.
Lead attendance outreach initiatives, including home visits, to improve school participation.
Develop strategies to engage students in school and program activities, tracking effectiveness of outreach.
Maintain full student enrollment through ongoing recruitment and relationship building with prospective students.
Develop initiatives to strengthen family involvement in student success.
Conduct weekly home visits and family meetings.
Coordinate student workshops, leadership opportunities, trips, and celebrations.
Oversee accurate case recordkeeping and ensure compliance with documentation requirements.
Use data platforms (e.g., Apricot, New Visions, monthly google sheets) to monitor staff activity and student progress.
In conjunction with the Program Director, offer supervision to staff members.
Provide oversight and coordination of the intake process for new students including facilitating orientation and Open House sessions
Organize, plan and facilitate family meetings including outreach to parents and guardians
Support students in developing and pursuing meaningful post-secondary plans, including college, vocational training, or employment pathways.
Providing individual and group counseling focused on academic, social, and emotional development as well as crisis intervention as needed.

Conduct family outreach and encourage involvement, as appropriate, to support student success.
Conduct initial intake assessments of students and/or their families to determine academic levels, work experience, employability, aptitudes, interests, support service needs, and other personal development factors.
Monitor and track student attendance on a daily basis; initiate outreach to absent students via phone calls, letters, and home visits.
Promote consistent school attendance by identifying barriers and connecting students and families to appropriate resources; conduct attendance outreach, including weekly home visits.
Maintain consistent and proactive communication with families to support students’ academic and personal well-being.
Develop and facilitate student-centered workshops that respond to the evolving needs of the school community.
Participate in staff/team meetings, including Department of Education (DOE) meetings, as needed.
Connect students and families with relevant internal services within Brooklyn Community Services and external community resources.
Monitor student academic performance and deliver timely support and interventions to promote achievement.
Enter and maintain all required student information in BCS’s internal database system (Apricot).
Document all student interactions and incident reports in Apricot and New Visions as appropriate, ensuring accurate and timely data entry, and maintain a monthly Google Sheet tracking all services provided.
Conduct regular documentation audits in Apricot, New Visions, and other databases.
Conduct community outreach to recruit prospective students and promote program visibility.
Collaborate with teachers to identify student needs and implement individualized support plans.
Monitor college advisement services and assure that all students develop a post-secondary plan, make college visits, and complete the college application process as appropriate.
Guide students through the college application process, including support with CUNY applications and FAFSA completion.
Participate in school events, staff meetings, professional development and agency-wide initiatives to promote a cohesive support network.
Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW; LMSW preferred), SIFI certified a plus
Previous supervisory experience.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
Commitment to punctuality, reliability, and professional integrity.
Must have a commitment to work from a strengths-based and/or youth development perspective
Successful completion of required background checks and clearances.
Preferred: Bilingual proficiency.
