Position Title: Assistant City Attorney (PT) Job Posting Closing Date: *** Open Until Filled *** The Provo City Legal Department is looking for an attorney to serve as part‑time legal counsel, with both civil and criminal duties. This position requires knowledge of principles and practices of civil law and criminal prosecution. Responsibilities Review assigned cases for civil action or probable cause; prosecute misdemeanors and infractions. Review complaints, statements, police reports, and written subpoenas; authorize issuance of complaints or information; draft ordinances and other documents. Coordinate efforts with various law enforcement agencies, government agencies, the public, attorneys, and other office staff. Represent the City in court and at hearings. Prepare pleadings, motions, orders, and other papers including briefs and memorandums for appeal proceedings. File legal documents and papers. May assist in more difficult civil or criminal legal work and in processing collections work. Assist office staff as needed and perform other related duties as required. Minimum Requirements Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school. Valid, lawful Driver License. Must maintain active membership in the Utah State Bar Association, including admission to practice before all state courts, and when required by the City Attorney, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah. Hours Up to 25 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, during business hours (7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.). Periodic evening work may be required. Schedule to be discussed during interview. Physical and Environmental Factors This position requires sitting at a computer and maintaining concentrated attention to detail for long periods. It requires court appearances and depositions in public and private buildings and exposure to stressful situations including strict deadlines, broad objectives, and dealing with individuals in highly emotional states. Work is performed inside an environmentally controlled building. May be exposed to unknown, dangerous, and/or hostile conditions.
