Grades 3-5 English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher

Position Summary The Grades 3–5 English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction that aligns with the Science of Reading and Indiana Academic Standards. The teacher is committed to ensuring all students become proficient readers, writers, speakers, and critical thinkers while preparing every student for success on the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment. The ideal candidate embraces continuous professional growth, actively participates in instructional coaching, implements feedback to improve teaching practices, and collaborates with colleagues to accelerate student achievement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Literacy Instruction Deliver explicit, systematic, and evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading . Implement instructional practices that strengthen phonics, fluency, vocabulary, language comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing. Use grade-level texts and high-quality instructional materials aligned to Indiana Academic Standards. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students requiring intervention or enrichment. Provide targeted small-group instruction based on student assessment data. IREAD Preparation Develop and implement instructional plans that prepare students for success on the Indiana IREAD assessment. Monitor student progress using formative, benchmark, and diagnostic assessments. Analyze assessment data to identify learning gaps and implement interventions. Collaborate with interventionists and instructional support staff to ensure students receive appropriate reading support. Maintain high expectations for student growth and literacy achievement. Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction Utilize multiple assessment tools to monitor student learning and inform instructional decisions. Maintain accurate records of student progress. Regularly review student achievement data to adjust instruction and improve outcomes. Communicate student progress with families and school staff. Classroom Environment Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom culture that promotes a love of reading and lifelong learning. Establish clear expectations for student behavior and academic excellence. Foster student independence, collaboration, perseverance, and critical thinking. Professional Responsibilities Participate actively in instructional coaching cycles, classroom observations, and professional learning communities (PLCs). Demonstrate openness to feedback and a commitment to continuously improving instructional practice. Implement coaching recommendations and evidence-based instructional strategies with fidelity. Collaborate with grade-level teams to analyze student data, plan instruction, and share best practices. Participate in ongoing professional development related to literacy instruction, the Science of Reading, and instructional excellence. Maintain professional communication with families regarding student learning and progress. Student Support Build strong relationships with students and families. Promote literacy across all content areas. Encourage student confidence, curiosity, and a growth mindset. Support the school's mission of ensuring every student achieves reading proficiency by the end of Grade 3 and continues developing strong literacy skills through Grade 5. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field. Valid Indiana Teaching License (or eligibility for licensure). Certification in Elementary Education. Knowledge of or willingness to implement the Science of Reading instructional framework. Experience teaching elementary literacy is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of literacy development and evidence-based reading instruction. Knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards and IREAD expectations. Ability to analyze student assessment data to improve instruction. Effective classroom management and relationship-building skills. Commitment to educational equity and high expectations for all learners. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Demonstrates flexibility, reflective practice, and a willingness to learn and grow professionally.
