Major Duties: A. Performs Suicide Risk Screening and Psychological Assessments/Testing The incumbent completes initial and updated psychological assessments in collaboration with the Veteran and if Veteran chooses the Veteran's family members and/or significant others. The goal of the assessment is to highlight the Veteran's strengths, limitations, and internal/external support and service needs to optimize the Veteran's functional status. The incumbent demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment and skills needed for all adult patients including geriatric patients related to their physical limitations, psychological needs, and age associated illnesses and conditions. The incumbent must understand the problems of advancing age and respect for diversification of the veteran population, being sensitive to human growth and development, age-appropriate needs, and be able to provide current and advanced, evidence-based techniques and treatment of the Veteran population. The incumbent provides DSM-V diagnoses, while using advanced clinical training, insight, and experience to identify viable treatment options. B. Develops and Implements Treatment Plans The incumbent collaboratively develops treatment plans with Veterans and Veterans' families or significant others, as indicated, and in coordination with interdisciplinary team members. Treatment plans should include goals, objectives, and interventions that address the Veteran's identified problem or what matters most to them and should include measurement-based care. The incumbent will complete the treatment plan and make updates as necessary and indicated based on Veterans' changing needs and response to interventions. The incumbent coordinates screening of patients for specialized mental health programs and provides ongoing treatment per mental health program guidelines. The incumbent will provide direct Veteran care at a minimum of 80% of their time per week through individual, group and/or family interventions when clinically indicated/appropriate and when of therapeutic benefit to the recipients. Emphasis is on evidence and measurement-based treatment interventions which include development of a positive and appropriate therapeutic relationship. Treatment interventions must be sensitive to the clinical, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs of Veterans. Treatment is scheduled in appropriate intervals of time over an appropriate span of time. C. Evaluation, Education, Supervision, Coaching, and Mentoring Evaluates his/her practice on an on-going basis through participation in professional peer review, case conferences, research studies, or other organized means. Is active in and accepts responsibility for the development and maintenance of professional standards of treatment. The incumbent will maintain appropriate continuing education for licensure renewal and provide documentation to credentialing staff to maintain up-to-date clinical privileges. May provide training to students, residents, interns, and fellows from other disciplines. Instructs them on psychosocial treatment and on the services available from psychology/mental health. Helps them understand family dynamics and the impact of psychosocial issues and problems on the Veteran's health and response to treatment. May conduct formal workshops and trainings for staff. The incumbent must demonstrate commitment and support of the goals of the Mental Health Service Line, the Medical Center, the VISN and the Department of Veterans Affairs by actively participating in work groups and/or projects where the mission is to reach organizational goals and objectives. D. Administrative Responsibilities The incumbent will enter all Veteran/family contacts, assessments, screenings, diagnostics, treatment, progress notes, follow-ups, and referrals in the electronic medical record using appropriate formats and templates following the VA guidelines and adhere to VA regulations regarding documentation. This information will be entered in a complete, confidential, and professional manner. The incumbent will participate in process improvement projects and comply with performance standards as required by the VA for their specific population and/or program. The incumbent will participate in activities that obtain feedback from Veterans to work to enhance services as needed. The incumbent will attend all appropriate staff meetings and other committee meetings as assigned or as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned
