JOB SUMMARY


The School Bus Mechanic provides daily repair and maintenance service on a variety of school buses, automobiles, and heavy-duty equipment to assure their safe, effective, and efficient operation in a timely manner.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability
3. Must be 21 years of age or older
4. Two years' experience diagnosing, repairing and performing preventative maintenance of heavy equipment, diesel motors, and other motor vehicles
5. Have or obtain a CDL License with School Bus Endorsement within 90 days of hire
6. Have or obtain Utah state safety inspection license within 12 months of hire
7. Must successfully pass and maintain the ability to complete the USBE Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers
8. Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, stand for extended periods of time, and lift up to 50 pounds
9. Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing; present information in front of groups of people

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


These are examples of skills and experience that the best-qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

1. Two years' experience diagnosing, repairing and performing preventative maintenance of school buses
2. ASE Certification (Master School Bus Mechanic)
3. Any certification/s from engine and or body manufacturers
4. Certifications in any alternative fuel vehicles (including electric)
5. Degree in the automotive field

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of school busses and all district vehicles
2. Follows prescribed preventative maintenance procedures and perfoms preventative maintenance on all vehicles
3. Performs services and repairs on school buses, including but not limited to, diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic and standard transmission repair and replacement, wheelchair lifts, air brake systems and electrical systems
4. Responds to emergency road calls during and after regularly scheduled work hours as needed
5. Drives equipment in and out of repair shop; operates and road tests repaired vehicles to ensure proper function
6. Talks to equipment operators, drives, and operates vehicles, or uses diagnostic equipment to identify problems and malfunctions
7. Performs diagnostic inspections on automotive and other motorized or stationary equipment to identify problems, using mechanical, electrical, and electronic testing equipment
8. Uses most major medium duty electronic diagnostic tools (Cummins Insite, Allison DOC)
9. Promotes high standards of safety and housekeeping methods in work-connected areas
10. Maintains vehicle repair records including the nature of the repair, labor hours, and parts used in making repairs
11. Performs functions of a school bus driver substitute when needed for the purpose of meeting the district's transportation service needs, and maintains positive working relationships with school district employees and students
12. Participates in continuing educational training for new techniques and job skills as requested
13. Participate in meetings, workshops, training and seminars, as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
14. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
15. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position. Assist other personnel in other district and department transportation related needs as required, and perform other duties as may be needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
16. Adapt to changing work priorities, work with limited supervision, prioritize, be attentive to details, and meet strict deadlines and schedules with frequent interruptions
17. Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees
18. Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment
19. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
