The employee will receive a bonus for each qualifying event: First Day of Employment: $2,500.00 18 Months of Employment: $2,500.00 42 Months of Employment: $2,500.00 The City of San Marino has a full‑time Police Officer (Lateral) position available in the Police Department. The City is seeking a seasoned law enforcement professional to join our team. The San Marino Police Department is comprised of 32 sworn officers and 11.5 civilian staff. The department is led by a Chief of Police, two Bureau Commanders, and a Civilian Administrative Manager. Sergeants, corporals, and officers are assigned to patrol or detective functions, as well as additional administrative duties. General Purpose Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent crime and enforce law and order; carrying out special assignments to protect life and property, and performing related tasks as required. Distinguishing Characteristics This is a sworn law enforcement classification under Section830.1 of the California Penal Code that meets all standards required by P.O.S.T. Officers report to a Police Sergeant on an assigned rotating watch. Officers receive day‑to‑day direction from Sergeants and/or Corporals and maintain close working relationships with other command staff and department personnel in communications, records, and administration. Officers may be assigned to provide training to new officers and other personnel. Duties Patrol an assigned area on foot, bike, or motor vehicle to suppress crime and enforce state law, city ordinances, or regulations. Handle specialized duties in traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal investigation, or records sections. Respond to calls for service as directed. Note and report traffic hazards; direct traffic; investigate and prepare reports on accidents, crimes, and miscellaneous activities. Provide directions and information to the public and community members. Make physical arrests; issue citations or verbal warnings; prepare reports on arrests and store or impound property. Intervene in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order. Appear in court, whether on or off duty, as the arresting officer or as a witness. Transport detainees, investigate complaints, interrogate suspects, and interview victims or witnesses. Write a daily log of activities; operate a radio in dispatching patrol units; fingerprint prisoners; take photographs of prisoners, crime or accident scenes; accept bail and give receipts. Utilize computer equipment to access information and complete reports. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of Safe use of firearms, batons, chemical agents, handcuffs, and other restraints. Standard office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, CAD, portable radio, 2‑way radio, binoculars, and night‑vision devices. Local, State, and Federal requirements for sworn public safety officers. Standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system. Law‑enforcement terminology, concepts, department policies, and performance standards. Applicable federal, state, and local laws and appropriate court decisions. Community and problem‑oriented policing methodologies. Principles of community engagement and neighborhood watch. Incident Command System. Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic mathematics. Skills and Abilities Operate motor vehicles, radios, binoculars, night‑vision devices, barricades, traffic cones, flares, pry bars, bicycles, fingerprinting apparatus, computers, digital and video cameras; use and care for firearms. Wear gas masks and protective gear; perform CPR if required. Respond to public and staff requests for assistance via phone or in person. Use appropriate physical techniques for apprehension and restraint. Meet all State and Federal requirements for sworn officers; read and understand policies, rules, instructions, laws, and police literature. Analyze situations and adopt a prompt, effective, and reasonable course of action. Communicate clearly and accurately in writing and orally; prepare reports and oral presentations. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Develop physical endurance and agility. Set priorities, organize workflow, and maintain records; multi‑task and be responsive to time‑sensitive matters. Use time effectively to maximize work assignments. Exercise good judgment and uphold confidentiality with sensitive information. Show interest in and understand the needs of internal and external customers. Develop and maintain working relationships. Comprehend spoken communication, non‑verbal cues, and body language. Maintain emotional stability and self‑control under pressure. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and accountability. Appreciate diverse backgrounds and cultures. Respond positively to change and modify behavior as needed. Adhere to all safety practices and encourage compliance. Employ collaborative decision‑making, judgment, and diplomacy. Show empathy toward community and colleagues. Provide service mentality and respect for diverse individuals. Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities includes: Education High‑school graduation (or G.E.D. or California Proficiency Certificate). Completion of a P.O.S.T. basic academy course. Licenses/Certificates Valid California Class"C" driver license with a satisfactory driving record. Certification or waiver of P.O.S.T. basic training, subject to review and approval by the Chief of Police. Valid Basic POST certificate or equivalent. Physical Demands and Work Environment Employee is regularly required to sit at a desk, attend meetings, or operate a vehicle for prolonged periods; talk or listen in person or by telephone; use hands to handle equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Vision and hearing requirements include clear vision and hearing within the normal range. Physical demands include lifting up to 15 pounds intermittently, twisting, walking, bending, squatting, performing fine manipulation, running, jumping, and driving safely under adverse conditions. Officers may be required to move up to 180 pounds and operate patrol vehicles up to 100 times per day. Work environment is 10% indoors and 90% outdoors, including patrol vehicles. Noise level is typically moderate but can reach high levels due to sirens and gunfire. Officers work in all weather conditions and may encounter hazardous situations.
