Position Summary

The Early Childhood Mental Health Therapist provides trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate mental health services to infants, young children, and their families. This position supports children from birth through age six who may be experiencing emotional, behavioral, developmental, attachment, or trauma-related challenges that impact daily functioning and family stability.

The therapist is responsible for completing assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, and providing therapeutic interventions to support healthy social-emotional development, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, and improve overall family functioning. Services are delivered in home, school, preschool, daycare, community-based, office, and/or telehealth settings based on the needs of the child and family.

The Early Childhood Mental Health Therapist collaborates closely with caregivers, pediatric providers, early intervention programs, schools, childcare providers, and community agencies to coordinate care and ensure families receive comprehensive support services. The therapist maintains timely and accurate documentation in compliance with agency, Medicaid, ODM, and CARF standards while utilizing evidence-based, culturally responsive, and family-centered practices.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide developmentally appropriate mental health services to infants, young children, and families in accordance with the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) model and organizational standards
• Deliver individual, family, and dyadic psychotherapy, Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS), and supportive interventions tailored to the developmental and emotional needs of young children and caregivers
• Complete intake assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and ongoing mental health assessments for referred children and families
• Administer and interpret the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) and other age-appropriate screening and assessment tools to support treatment planning and monitor progress
• Develop, implement, and maintain individualized, strengths-based, measurable treatment plans in collaboration with caregivers and families
• Gather, document, and maintain clinical information necessary to support effective treatment planning, service coordination, and ongoing assessment of client progress
• Support healthy attachment, emotional regulation, social-emotional development, and caregiver-child relationships through evidence-based and trauma-informed interventions
• Develop crisis and safety plans with families and provide crisis intervention, coaching, and support as needed
• Empower children, caregivers, and families by building skills related to communication, coping strategies, emotional regulation, parenting support, and interpersonal relationships
• Establish and maintain therapeutic, professional, and culturally responsive relationships with children, families, caregivers, and community supports
• Collaborate with pediatric providers, childcare centers, schools, early intervention providers, referral sources, and community agencies to coordinate care and support treatment goals
• Provide consultation and supportive services to childcare staff, preschool staff, and caregivers as appropriate and authorized
• Advocate for children and families to assist with access to community resources, referrals, and supportive services
• Participate in treatment team meetings, supervision, consultations, and ongoing clinical trainings as required
• Maintain productivity expectations and manage assigned caseload while providing high-quality clinical care
• Complete timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation including intake assessments, DECA assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and aftercare planning in accordance with agency, Medicaid, ODM, CARF, and state standards
• Maintain professionalism, ethical conduct, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries in all interactions
• Maintain flexibility in scheduling to accommodate family needs, including community-based and evening appointments as needed
• Obtain and maintain all required licenses, certifications, trainings, and supervisory documentation in accordance with organization and state requirements
• Represent GuidingPoint Behavioral Health in a professional and positive manner with clients, families, referral sources, and community partners

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study may be considered depending on experience and credentialing requirements
• Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a closely related field (Master’s preferred)
• Current Ohio professional licensure required in at least one of the following: LSW, LISW, LPC, LPCC, LMFT, RN, or equivalent clinical license
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in IECMH or closely related early childhood behavioral health services required
• Must have current or recent experience (within the past 3 years) working directly with children birth to age six and their families, or supervising professionals providing services to this population
• Basic training or experience in the IECMH Consultation Model and implementation of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) preferred or required upon hire
• Holds or is eligible to obtain and maintain Ohio Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) professional credential

 

Preferred Skills

• Experience providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services for young children and families in home, school, childcare, or community-based settings
• Strong understanding of early childhood development, attachment, trauma, and caregiver-child relational dynamics
• Strong clinical, organizational, communication, and documentation skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, community-based team
• Proficiency in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems and standard clinical documentation practices
• Experience providing or supporting consultation services in early childhood settings preferred
