Job Description

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of diesel vehicles and heavy-duty equipment across two locations. You will perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and complex repairs on class 6–8 trucks, trailers, forklifts, and related equipment while working with modern diagnostic tools and OEM resources. The position requires a hands-on mechanic who can work independently, follow maintenance schedules, and ensure safe, reliable operation of all fleet assets.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive fleet maintenance and repair on diesel-powered vehicles, including class 6–8 trucks, trailers, and heavy-duty equipment across two locations.

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain hydraulic and air brake systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.

• Perform after-treatment and emissions system repairs on class 6–8 diesel vehicles, following current standards and OEM guidelines.

• Use diagnostic platforms (such as Noregon, Snap-on, Nexiq, Altel, and similar systems) to retrieve and interpret diagnostic codes and troubleshoot issues.

• Remove and replace mounted wheels and torque them to proper specifications using appropriate tools and procedures.

• Utilize diagnostic troubleshooting codes to identify root causes of mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues and perform effective repairs.

• Manage parts usage, support inventory control processes, and ensure accurate documentation of parts used in repairs and maintenance.

• Work independently under limited supervision, including performing work remotely from a direct supervisor and prioritizing tasks effectively.

• Operate and maintain shop tools and equipment, such as engine hoists, welding equipment, tire changers, and other small tools, in a safe and efficient manner.

• Perform preventative maintenance activities, including scheduled oil changes, inspections, and adjustments, while documenting all work completed.

• Track mileage and usage hours for equipment to ensure maintenance is performed in accordance with established schedules.

• Identify, document, and repair issues found during preventative maintenance inspections to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.

• Use computers and digital devices (such as iPads, desktop computers, laptops, and handheld devices) for diagnostics, work orders, documentation, and accessing technical information.

• Repair forklifts and related equipment, including propane, electric, and battery systems, hydraulic components, and pallet jacks.

• Work with manufacturing standard manuals and OEM support tools to ensure repairs meet current standards and incorporate the latest technology updates.

• Diagnose and repair heavy-duty equipment, including class 6, 7, and 8 vehicles, addressing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

• Perform transmission repairs and related drivetrain work as needed, along with routine preventative maintenance tasks.

• Follow safety procedures and best practices while performing physical tasks such as lifting, bending, reaching, climbing, and handling tools and equipment.

• Use your own basic hand tools while properly caring for and accounting for their value, and utilize provided specialty and diagnostic tools as required.

• Maintain clear, accurate records of work performed, including diagnostics, repairs, parts used, and maintenance schedules.

• Collaborate with other mechanics when needed while also being able to work independently on assigned equipment and jobs.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of diesel fleet mechanic experience, with hands-on work on diesel vehicles and equipment.

• Experience or training involving hydraulic and air brake systems.

• Experience performing after-treatment and emissions repairs on class 6–8 diesel vehicles.

• Experience using diagnostic platforms such as Noregon, Snap-on, Nexiq, Altel, or similar systems.

• Experience removing and replacing mounted wheels and torquing them to specification.

• Experience utilizing diagnostic troubleshooting codes to identify and resolve issues.

• Experience with parts management and inventory control processes.

• Experience working under limited supervision and performing work independently.

• Experience using shop tools, including engine hoists, welding equipment, tire-changing tools, and small hand tools.

• Experience with preventative maintenance programs, including following maintenance schedules, documenting completed work, and tracking mileage and usage hours.

• Experience working with computers and digital devices (such as iPads, desktops, handhelds, and laptops) for diagnostics and documentation.

• Experience repairing forklifts, including propane, electrical, battery, and hydraulic systems, as well as pallet jacks.

• Experience working with manufacturing standard manuals and OEM support tools, including familiarity with current standards, electronic modules, and updated technology.

• Experience repairing heavy-duty equipment, including class 6, 7, and 8 vehicles.

• Strong mechanical aptitude with a well-rounded mechanic experience, ideally including diesel, fleet, and engine work.

• Experience with electrical systems and diagnostics on vehicles and equipment.

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, reaching, climbing, and handling objects (with or without accommodation).

• At least 18 years of age.

• Ability to provide and use personal basic hand tools appropriate for diesel and fleet mechanic work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 8–10 years of diesel mechanic experience for candidates seeking to take on larger and more complex jobs.

• experience working on transmissions in addition to general preventative maintenance.

• Experience working on trailer lift gates and related systems.

• Strong electrical experience, including diagnosing and repairing complex electrical issues.

• Experience with CDL-regulated vehicles and understanding of related requirements.

• Familiarity with diagnostic systems such as JayPro or similar platforms.

• Experience working on a variety of equipment types, including different classes of trucks and heavy-duty machinery.

• Experience with welding for repair and fabrication tasks.

• Knowledge and experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and preventive maintenance best practices.

• Comfort working with OEM support tools and staying up to date with new technologies and electronic modules in modern fleets.

Work Environment

This position supports fleet maintenance across two locations, including a facility at 6100 NE Loop 410, working primarily in a shop environment with occasional work on various types of equipment. The standard schedule runs from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch, and weekend work is scheduled on a rotating basis. You will use a combination of your own basic hand tools and company-provided specialty, diagnostic, ergonomic, and high-tech equipment. The role is physically active and involves lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, climbing, pinching, and handling tools and components (with or without accommodation). You will regularly use diagnostic platforms, computers, laptops, tablets, and handheld devices to perform diagnostics and document work. The shop environment includes the use of engine hoists, welding equipment, tire-changing machinery, and other standard mechanic tools, and you will often work independently under limited direct supervision.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Antonio, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.60 - $35.20/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
