Pharmacy Technician I

Pharmacy TechnicianWorking under the day to day supervision of the pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications. This includes but is not limited to: receiving, distribution, management of expiration dates, management of inventory in Pyxis, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The job requires excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.Key ResponsibilitiesWorks under the supervision of:Pharmacy LeadershipPharmacistsOrdering/Receiving:Assists with receiving order from wholesalerScans in deliveryProperly inventories/stickers delivery to ensure all items are receivedConfirms that each med is "scannable". Involves pharmacist when appropriateHelps to maintain proper stock levels of drugs, supplies and solutions by Informing in writing, the need for an item when it is getting lowRepackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when necessaryCompounding:Performs calculations for dosing, unit conversions, admixture volumesPrepares clean room and sterile products area for daily useFollows clean room policies and proceduresPrepares low and medium risk sterile and non-sterile compoundsComplies with Universal precautions and uses Aseptic technique when compoundingInventory Management:Checks expiration dates in and outside the departmentCredits and debits patients in Meditech if meds reordered or returnedResolves missing medication issuesPerforms monthly floor inspections to ensure integrity of medications on the units and in patient care areas.Ensures all medications are properly labeledProperly disposes of medications, hazardous substances, sharpsProperly identifies and returns expired meds eligible for creditAssists in semi-annual inventory activities as neededFills Medication Orders:Receives labels and orders, and is able to accurately select proper drug, dosage form and strengthAccurately retrieves medications from ADC fill listNeatly organizes filled meds for checking.Accurately retrieves medications as requested at the windowProperly refills trays and kits including but not limited to: Code Trays, STEMI kits, anaphylaxis kits, "tackle boxes" in preparation for pharmacist to check.Accurately fills OR MachinesDelivers Medication:Performs routine rounds to patient care areas and units in timely mannerDelivers meds to proper location including but not limited to: ADC, Med Room or a nurse if requested.Updates machines with current date for drugOutdates meds in ADC at each delivery to machineReturns meds from the floors when needFills Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC):Understands process of loading and unloadingFills ADC accurately by consistent use of scanner when requiredLoads meds in a neat precise manner without overfilling pocketIs able to trouble shoot minor equipment issues with ADCIs able to reboot equipment as neededCommunication:Uses exceptional customer service skills to resolve issuesAnswers phones and triages phone calls that need a pharmacistCommunicates well with nursing and other staff outside of the pharmacy departmentProfessionalism:Maintains a high degree of professionalism within and outside the departmentMaintains excellent working relationships with othersDresses professionallyMaintains a neat, clean and organized work areaRepresents the Department of Pharmacy and acts as liaison if needed when outside the departmentComplies with HIPAA policiesSupports the training of new staffManages time effectively and prioritizes accordinglyMaintains Logs:Responsible for the daily accurate documentation of logs including but not limited to: refrigerators, hood cleaning, eye washReports any omissions or errorsHandle Controlled Substances:Understands the importance of excellent record keeping, accuracy and handoffs when dealing with Controlled Substances.Immediately reports any concerns/discrepancies to pharmacist or supervisorRequired Knowledge & Skills:Written and oral communication skillsBasic math needed for compoundingAbility to work in a team environmentAbility to problem solveAbility to provide a high level of customer service to patients visitors and staffEducation/Experience/Licensure/Technical/Other:Certification/Licensure: Is responsible for maintaining licensure CPhT and State registration as requiredIs responsible for completing all educational modules including but not limited to: Steward UniversityPerforms Gloved finger-tip and media fill test as required.Day and evening shifts with every other weekend required.Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/VeteransAccording to the FTC, there has been a rise in employment offer scams.
