Cobb Animal Services is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician to assist in the provision of emergency, medical and surgical veterinary care for the animals housed at the County’s animal shelter. As a vital member of the Department of Public Safety, you are a critical connection with the public and ensuring a safe and healthy community for our pets and furry friends. Responsibilities Assists veterinarian(s) with examination and treatment of sick and injured animals (triage patients, restrain animals, wound care, sample collection, place IV catheters, monitor vital signs, manage pain, administer medications, fill prescriptions, prepare samples for labs, lift high‑energy animals, assist with humane euthanasia, prepare prescriptions for adopted animals). Performs surgical preparation duties and assists with animal surgeries (prepare anesthesia machines, ensure oxygen and pulse oximeter operational, set up surgery table, clean surgical instruments, wrap/sterilize instruments, prepare scrub, verify documentation, assist scrub‑gown, calculate/administer sedation, intubate patient, monitor vitals, clean/tattoo patient, monitor patient during recovery). Performs administrative tasks (maintain inventory of products and supplies, order supplies, confer with vendors, design/draft forms, consult on equipment or software, prepare and maintain federally mandated drug records, input data from veterinarian notes, maintain records on controlled substances, maintain monthly spays/neuter counts, maintain records for K9 unit dogs, update medication spreadsheets, maintain Health certificates, oversee routine equipment maintenance, call prescriptions for adopted animals). Prepares the radiograph machine for use and performs radiography; takes radiographs required by the veterinarian(s) and sends digital images to others as needed. Provides basic medical care when a veterinarian is not available (giving advice on transport, communicating with veterinarian, following established protocols). Assists with the training of Animal Services officers (drawing blood, calculating drugs, injecting for humane euthanasia, basic first aid, conducting initial health assessments). Provides communication within CCAS and to the local veterinary community and the public (serving as the first contact, answering questions, giving information to adopters, rescuers, and veterinary clinics, attending public relations events). Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma required; Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology preferred; supplemented by two years of experience in animal care. Preferred Qualifications Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology or related. Valid Veterinary Technician license. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must obtain a Veterinary Technician license within two years from the date of hire. Physical Requirements Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort with emphasis on climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects (up to 100 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals; some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, animal or wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, disease, or rude/irate customers.
