Position Overview Transportation Engineer Trainee positions within the State Highway Design Unit at CTDOT, Newington Headquarters. Open to current students graduating with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering by the end of May 2027. Position Details Location: Newington, CT Full time 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, first shift Required availability to travel for training, conferences, meetings, and field reviews Responsibilities Perform progressively challenging duties as technical skills are acquired during the training period. Develop transportation projects to improve safety, capacity, and efficiency of the State’s transportation system Support capital projects such as intersection improvements, modern roundabouts, multi‑use trails, corridor improvements, complete street upgrades, emergency repairs, and more Assist in planning, design, and analysis of roadways, bridges, drainage, and multi‑modal improvements Use CAD and other software tools to prepare drawings, calculations, and design documents Collaborate with municipal leaders, neighborhood groups, businesses, and the public on outreach and stakeholder engagement Work under supervision to implement solutions and recommend improvements Minimum Qualifications Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering Knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles, and methods Skill in drafting, calculations, and use of computer applications Preferred Qualifications Accredited bachelor’s degree in civil engineering by May 2027 Completion of transportation engineering coursework and familiarity with transportation concepts Minimum 3.0 GPA in relevant engineering courses Engineer in Training (EIT) licensure Experience working as part of a collaborative team Experience or coursework in CAD or engineering related software Strong oral and written communication, report writing, and presentation skills Special Requirements Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required Travel may be required Working Conditions Exposure to some risk of injury or physical harm from highway, construction site, or on‑site environments. Moderate discomfort from year‑round weather conditions. Salary and Promotion $76,307 annually as Transportation Engineer Trainee. After successful completion of a one‑year training program, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 ($85,151–$104,720). After one to two years as TE1, promotion to TE2 ($95,865–$123,809).
