ELIGIBILITY : Successful applicants must be eligible to work in the United States on or before the confirmed start date. This includes being a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a foreign national with work authorization that doesn't require employer sponsorship. Individuals must maintain this eligibility throughout employment.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Graduate of an accredited PA Program with a master’s degree (doctorate preferred), OR prior experience in academia (PA educational experience preferred)
  • If a PA, eligible for Georgia Physician Assistant licensure, OR other licensure as appropriate to qualifications
  • If a PA, current NCCPA certification, OR other certification appropriate to qualifications
  • At least 3 years of prior clinical experience; other professional experience will be considered
  • Prior academic experience preferred
  • Ability to function well within a collegial, collaborative work environment

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

ROLE OF THE PRINCIPAL FACULTY:

  • The principal faculty member reports to the Chair and Program Director (Chair/PD). Principal faculty (PF) responsibilities are varied and may differ to some degree based upon the needs of the department.
  • Generally, the tasks of the PF member are focused primarily on teaching, advising, service and scholarship, and ongoing programmatic self-assessment. The PF member performs all other duties as directed by the Chair/PD, the Dean of the Ivester College of Health Sciences (ICHS), the Brenau University Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the Brenau University President or designee.

Scholarship

  1. Remain current within their academic discipline and participate in professional academic venues.
  2. Participate in faculty development and research within the mission of the University.
  3. Actively promote scholarship among students.

Teaching

  1. Serve as Instructor for didactic courses and EOR seminars, as assigned.
  2. Prepare syllabi, book lists, objectives and learning outcomes, as required.
  3. Prepare assigned lectures using applicable technology.
  4. Assume assigned role in test preparation and other methods of evaluating student performance.
  5. Participate in text selection or other teaching modalities.
  6. Assess student progress in assigned courses, prepare and submit final grades, and notify Directors of Didactic or Clinical Education, and Assistant Program Director (APD) and/or Chair/PD of any “at-risk” students.
  7. Instruct and supervise students in assigned clinical practice labs, simulation activities, and small group sessions.
  8. Evaluate student performance in didactic and clinical courses (including written and practical exams, Clinical Problem Solving (CPS) and OSCEs) and the program summative evaluation.
  9. Critique student assignments and provide prompt feedback.
  10. Conduct class evaluations and complete other evaluations in accordance with college and university policy.
  11. Assist with student tutorial/remediation sessions.
  12. Maintain student records and do appropriate follow-up on all correspondence pertaining to students and course assignments and assessments.
  13. Set annual personal and professional development goals, attending appropriate activities and conferences to meet goals.
  14. Keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities.

Advising

As advisor of a specific number of students (advisees), the PF member shall:

  1. Meet formally with each advisee a minimum of once during each semester of the program to review student academic and professional performance and provide feedback on any issues.
  2. Assess student’s readiness for program progression after each semester.
  3. Meet with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally, to provide opportunities for the student to discuss their adjustment processes, approaches to meeting the expectations of the program and to assess for potential areas that can be addressed in an attempt to improve performance.
  4. Refer students to counselors as needed.
  5. Bring to faculty meetings for discussion information on any student considered at risk, needing additional monitoring, and/or requiring additional coursework or any other form of remediation to meet program-defined learning outcomes.
  6. Maintain up-to-date records on student advisees and interactions with advisees.
  7. Discuss with Chair/PD any student issues regarding an advisee’s inability to successfully progress through the program.

Service

The PF member is expected to:

  1. Attend and appropriately contribute to university-wide and ICHS faculty meetings.
  2. Attend and appropriately contribute to departmental faculty and staff meetings, annual retreats and accreditation-related activities.
  3. Participate in the development, revision, and annual updating of the program’s mission statement and curricular materials.
  4. Assist in the design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of curriculum, as assigned.
  5. Participate in student admissions and interviewing processes, selecting appropriate applicants for admission.
  6. Assist in the evaluation of clinical sites and preceptors, as assigned.
  7. Assume responsibilities in grant-related projects as assigned.
  8. Assist in ongoing programmatic evaluation, as assigned.
  9. Assume other duties within the program when needed and feasible.
  10. Serve as an elected or appointed representative on departmental, ICHS, and/or university committees, as assigned.

Community Relations Within and Outside of Brenau

  1. Serve as a representative of the department within the Brenau community through committee service, as assigned. Attend university-sponsored events and assist in the establishment of collegial relationships with other faculty, staff and administrators.
  2. Represent the university to the community in a professional and positive way through volunteer service, participation in community events, and professional affiliations.
  3. Maintain a strong and visible presence in local, state, national and international professional activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities required.

Work Hours:
Full-time. 37.5 hours per week. Generally, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Hours may be extended to meet the needs of the department. Nights/weekends as needed.

Appointment Length:

12 months, continuous

Environmental and Working Conditions/ Physical Demands and Aptitudes:
Mostly Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment related to teaching. Prolonged periods sitting and standing. worker is required to have close visual acuity to grade papers, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to travel short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. Exerting up to 15 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Some repetitive motion.

Title IX Implications:

Responsible employee
Any employee who is not a confidential employee. Brenau University requires that all Responsible Employees MUST report any possible sexual harassment or discrimination based on sex to the Title IX Coordinator when the employee has information about conduct that reasonably may constitute sex discrimination or sex-based harassment under Title IX or this part. Employees are encouraged to report these concerns in writing via email. When an employee or a student (or a person who has a legal right to act on behalf of a student) informs any employee (including both Responsible and Confidential employees) of the employee’s or student’s pregnancy or related conditions, that employee must promptly provide that person with the Title IX Coordinator’s contact information and inform that person that the Title IX Coordinator can coordinate specific actions to prevent sex discrimination and ensure the employee’s or student’s equal access to the Recipient’s education program or activity.

Salary- Exempt (paid bi-weekly)

Special Requirements: Brenau University conducts various screenings to ensure a safe and secure environment. These checks are a condition of employment and may be performed at different times throughout employment. (1) Background Checks: All new hires must undergo a criminal background check. To maintain employment, individuals must have and maintain a favorable criminal history. The university may also conduct random background checks. Additional checks may be performed for certain roles. (2) Credit Checks: required for positions that handle university funds or credit cards or as otherwise required. (3) Motor Vehicle and Driving Checks: employees who operate a university vehicle or drive on university business must have a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) run as part of the new hire process or as the requirement to drive is added to job responsibilities. To be approved for university travel, employees must meet the following criteria: be at least 21 years old, have and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license, and have and maintain a good driving record. As a condition of employment, employees must report any arrest (within five days of its occurrence) to the Office of Human Resources, including traffic violations for those listed on our auto insurance policy. Disclosure of subsequent legal action (conviction, dismissal of charges, etc.) must also be reported to the Office of Human Resources. It will be evaluated considering continued employment with the immediate supervisor. (4) Drug Screening: pre-employment/post-offer drug screens and random drug screens are performed for certain sensitive positions. Random drug screens are also performed on those who travel regularly, or those who operate a university vehicle. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug screening.

Proof of any professional degree, license, or certification (collectively, “Credentials”) required to competently perform the work for which the employee is hired must have been submitted at the time of application for the position. Discovery during the course of employee’s employment that applicable Credentials have lapsed, been terminated, were misrepresented, or were falsified may result in immediate termination of employee’s employment.
