About the School

Georgetown Day School opened its doors in 1945 as the first integrated school in a segregated city. Governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the parent body and administered by an appointed Head of School, it was founded by seven families who wanted to create a school committed not only to academic excellence and educational innovation but also to a value system emphasizing appreciation and respect for others. Believing that diversity was the ground out of which all deep and rich learning occurs, they established a school where all children would be welcome, celebrated, and challenged to be their best selves.

Today, the School's philosophy, programs, and position in the national educational landscape strongly reflect its roots. Having grown from 12 children in 1945 to 1075 students in PK-12 today, GDS is recognized as one of Washington, D.C.’s and the nation’s most dynamic educational institutions.

Since the school’s founding, GDS has called eight different locations home. In the fall of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools were all joined on one extraordinary campus.

FLSA: Exempt

TYPE OF ROLE: Part-time

COMPENSATION: Stipend/daily rate ($175 for 2.5 hours/day)

BENEFITS: Not-eligible

Admissions Play Visit Teachers play a critical role in the process of observing and interpreting the cognitive, non-cognitive, physical, and creative capacities of children applying to prekindergarten, kindergarten and first grade. We seek candidates who are passionate, innovative, energetic, and positive. GDS opened its doors in 1945 as the first integrated school in a segregated city. Location: Admissions play visits are held on-campus

Dates: October 14th through the end of January. Visits are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and

Thursday mornings. Training will take place on-campus on October 1st.

Type of Opportunity: Part-time, (9:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., 2.5-hours/day)

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Setting up play visit centers on our Lower/Middle School campus

• Greeting prospective families in the school lobby and escorting children to and from the Play Visit space

• Facilitating Play Visits and evaluating prekindergarten, kindergarten and first grade readiness with individuals and small groups of children

• Engaging with individual and small groups of children

• Completing student visit observation and assessment forms immediately following the Play Visit

Secondary/Additional Duties and Responsibilities

• Other duties outside this description may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

• Degree in early childhood education preferred

• Experience as an early childhood educator preferred

• Experience working with preschool children (Ages 3-6 years old)

• Demonstrated understanding of early childhood development

Skills

• Communicate clearly with young children,

• Organize activities, manage behavior positively, and maintain a safe learning environment

• Assess young children through engaging lessons and fun activities

• Collaborate with other play visit teachers

• Support applicant students from diverse demographic backgrounds
