GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Traffic Signal Technician performs skilled technical work involving the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of traffic signals, flashing beacons, school zone flashers, and related electronic traffic control devices. Work includes troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems, ensuring equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, and responding to emergency signal malfunctions. The technician may also assist with system upgrades, timing adjustments, and coordination with public works or transportation departments. Work is performed under limited supervision with a high degree of independence and requires knowledge of traffic control standards, electrical systems, and safety protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned: Maintains operation of traffic systems for the City of Lebanon. Works with contractors and engineers in design and construction. Repairs, maintains, and installs all Christmas lights in the City of Lebanon. Repairs and maintains lights at the City of Lebanon Airport underpass. Repairs and maintains streetlights at 231 South & 1-40 intersections. Repair and maintain lights at the Don Fox Park and Jimmy Floyd Center. Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role. Hangs street signs, flags, and banners at intersections where needed for special events. Works with all City departments where a bucket truck is needed.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations for dealing with customers and other employees of the city. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions safely and efficiently.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Knowledge of first aid practices. Knowledge of basic electricity. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees. Knowledge of the city service area and distribution system. Ability to test and repair traffic signaling devices. Ability to use judgment in evaluating problem situations. Ability to keep accurate records and make timely reports.

EDUCATION

A High School Diploma or G.E.D is required.

DRIVER’S LICENSE

Valid Tennessee Driver's License with class B CDL endorsement and clear driving record are required or must be able to obtain class B CDL within 6 months of date of hire.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience in traffic maintenance or a related field is required. Additionally, one 1 years of bucket truck is preferred.

CERTIFICATION

Possession of Level I International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Certification for Traffic Signal Controls strongly preferred.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

Due to the on-call nature of this position, the ideal candidate should reside in Wilson County or within a 45-minute drive of the Public Works (410 Park Dr, Lebanon, TN 37087). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENTAL, AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and or move, push, pull, or carry up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee must have the capacity to climb ladders and work from aerial equipment with little fear of heights. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
