Role Overview At Richland Construction C, performs various inspection duties on road and bridge construction projects as a certified inspector in at least three of the following certifications: SCDOT/ACI (American Concrete Institute)/SCDES (SC Department of Environmental Services) SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage & Base Inspector SCDOT Concrete Field Technician SCDOT Foundations Technician SCDOT Pavement Preservation Level 1 (Asphalt Seal, Micro/Slurry Seal, Concrete Pavement) ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I SCDES Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector Responsibilities Perform inspection duties on construction projects in areas where inspector certification is not required, such as pavement markings, grassing, and sign installation. Document daily construction activities and field measurements on standard inspection forms and field diaries. Sample and perform various field tests on construction materials including asphalt, concrete, and soil to ensure compliance with specifications. Monitor workzones and complete weekly 600.02 (Workzone Traffic Control Review) forms for day and nighttime inspections as directed. Conduct survey duties using survey instruments, metering devices, tape measures, and test equipment to establish and maintain construction lines and grades. Assist in the training and development of construction inspectors. Qualifications A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician‑related experience—or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. Physical Demands and Working Conditions This position requires extended periods of sitting or standing at a desk, occasional travel, and the ability to bend, stoop, reach, twist, climb, balance, and kneel. It also requires driving and walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to vehicular traffic, and exposure to natural environmental hazards. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and may need to work outside normal hours, especially during inclement weather or departmental emergencies. Overtime, nighttime, and weekend work may be required during hazardous weather or emergencies.
