Operations Director (Veterinary Services)

Salary: $80,000–$100,000 annually
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Location: Bend, Oregon

 

The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) is looking for an experienced operations and people leader to oversee the systems, staff, resources, and day-to-day operations that make our veterinary programs successful.

This role will partner with our supervising veterinarians to ensure our veterinary teams have what they need to do their best work—from effective staffing and workflows to equipment, inventory, budgets, systems, and cross-department coordination.

Our Veterinary Services Department supports both animals in HSCO's shelter and pets in our community through veterinary outreach programs. This is an opportunity for someone who understands veterinary operations, loves developing teams and improving systems, and wants to put those skills to work in a mission-driven organization.

What You'll Lead

You'll take ownership of the operational health of Veterinary Services. You'll:

• Lead the day-to-day operations of our shelter medicine and community veterinary outreach programs.
• Directly supervise and develop veterinary support staff, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, coaching, and performance management.
• Partner with our supervising veterinarians to translate clinical priorities into effective staffing, workflows, systems, and resource plans.
• Identify bottlenecks and improve processes that make work more efficient and sustainable for our veterinary teams.
• Oversee inventory, purchasing, equipment, vendor relationships, and veterinary software systems.
• Manage departmental resources and participate in annual budget development and financial planning.
• Ensure operational compliance with applicable veterinary, workplace safety, controlled substance, and other regulatory requirements.
• Build strong working relationships between Veterinary Services, Shelter Operations, and other HSCO departments.
• Track operational performance and use data to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Serve as a member of HSCO's Senior Leadership Team and contribute to organization-wide planning and strategy.

What Success Looks Like

During your first year, you'll focus on getting to know the people and programs behind our veterinary services, then use that understanding to strengthen how the department operates. Success will include:

• Building trust and strong working relationships with veterinary staff, supervising veterinarians, and organizational leadership.
• Creating clear, effective systems for staffing, scheduling, onboarding, communication, and accountability.
• Improving workflows so our veterinary teams can spend more time focused on patient care and less time navigating operational barriers.
• Ensuring equipment, inventory, facilities, and other resources reliably support both shelter and outreach veterinary services.
• Strengthening coordination between Veterinary Services, Shelter Operations, and other HSCO departments.
• Establishing sustainable operational systems that support our people, our programs, and continued growth.

Who We're Looking For

You may be a veterinary practice manager, hospital manager, veterinary operations leader, animal welfare leader, or someone with comparable experience managing people and complex operations.

You should bring:

• At least three years of successful supervisory or management experience.
• An established professional history in veterinary operations, animal sheltering, or a related field.
• Experience leading veterinary support staff or comparable teams.
• A strong understanding of veterinary practice operations and workflows.
• Demonstrated ability to develop people, build effective teams, and navigate personnel issues.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A collaborative leadership style and the ability to work effectively with veterinarians, support staff, volunteers, and organizational leaders.

A bachelor's degree, Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) credential, and experience in shelter medicine, HQHVSN, nonprofit veterinary practice, or community medicine strongly preferred but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

Target Hiring Range: $80,000–$100,000 annually , depending on qualifications and experience.
