Career & Technical Education Teacher - Automotive Technology

Automotive Technology Instructor

Provide students with instruction in Automotive Technology through classroom and laboratory/shop experiences designed to fulfill Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), Career and Technical Education (CTE) requirements, and district curriculum goals. Prepare students for postsecondary education, industry certifications, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities within the automotive industry by developing technical skills, workplace readiness, leadership, and safe work habits. The goal is to have students finish the program and be industry certified to meet TEA CCMR standards.

Preferred Qualifications
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications.
  • ASE Master Technician certification preferred.
  • Industry-recognized automotive certifications.
  • Experience preparing students for ASE Entry-Level Student Certifications.
  • Minimum of two years of verified automotive industry experience preferred.
  • Experience in automotive diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.
  • Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or supervising youth or adults preferred.
Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of current industry standards and emerging technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of TEKS and CTE program requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate and instruct students in the use of automotive tools and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and business partners.
  • Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with technology and instructional software.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management
  1. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with TEKS, district curriculum, and CTE program requirements.
  2. Provide instruction in automotive systems, including but not limited to:
  • Engine repair and performance
  • Electrical and electronic systems
  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Fuel systems
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Drivetrain and transmission systems
  • Automotive diagnostics
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Utilize classroom instruction, demonstrations, simulations, and hands-on laboratory experiences to enhance student learning.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Integrate employability skills, workplace readiness, financial literacy, customer service, and professional expectations into daily instruction.
  • Prepare students for industry certifications, postsecondary education, military careers, apprenticeships, and workforce opportunities.
  • Evaluate student performance through written assessments, practical assessments, projects, and laboratory activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, certifications, and student progress.
Student Growth and Development
  1. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior necessary to provide an effective learning environment.
  2. Encourage student leadership and participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), including SkillsUSA.
  3. Serve as a positive role model for students in professional conduct, work ethic, and safety practices.
  4. Assist students with career exploration, career planning, and postsecondary opportunities.
Program Management
  1. Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and productive automotive laboratory/shop environment.
  2. Develop, implement, and enforce shop safety procedures and protocols.
  3. Conduct and document safety training for all students.
  4. Maintain inventory records for tools, equipment, instructional materials, and supplies.
  5. Coordinate maintenance and repair of shop equipment and instructional resources.
  6. Assist with annual budget planning, equipment purchases, and program improvement initiatives.
  7. Ensure compliance with district policies, TEA requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
Industry Certifications and Work-Based Learning
  1. Prepare students for ASE Entry-Level Certifications and other approved industry-recognized credentials.
  2. Maintain documentation and reporting requirements related to student certification attainment.
  3. Coordinate and support internships, job shadowing experiences, apprenticeships, and other work-based learning opportunities when available.
  4. Assist students in developing employability skills necessary for successful workforce participation.
Business and Community Relations
  1. Establish and maintain partnerships with local automotive businesses, dealerships, repair facilities, and industry representatives.
  2. Coordinate guest speakers, industry visits, and workforce development opportunities.
  3. Participate in and support district CTE Advisory Committee meetings.
  4. Assist in recruiting advisory committee members from business and industry partners.
  5. Promote the Automotive Technology program through recruitment events, career fairs, presentations, and community outreach activities.
  6. Work collaboratively with business and industry partners to ensure curriculum remains aligned with workforce needs.
Grant and Compliance Responsibilities
  1. Assist with Grant planning, implementation, and reporting activities as assigned.
  2. Maintain records required for state reporting, program monitoring, audits, inventories, certifications, and safety compliance.
  3. Provide documentation necessary to support district accountability and CTE program requirements.
Professional Responsibilities
  1. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and district training.
  2. Maintain required professional certifications and credentials.
  3. Stay current on automotive industry standards, instructional best practices, and emerging technologies.
  4. Support district goals and initiatives.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal, superintendent, or designee.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise assigned students in classrooms, laboratories, shop environments, work-based learning settings, field trips, and extracurricular activities.

Equipment Used

Automotive diagnostic equipment, lifts, hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, computers, scanners, instructional technology, and standard office equipment.

Mental Demands

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions; communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members; meet established deadlines.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, climbing, reaching, and use of automotive tools and equipment. Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, and other conditions commonly associated with automotive shop environments.
