Controller

Client is seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee the daily accounting operations for the Petersburg, VA, location and support the broader finance organization. This role will be responsible for managing month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting support, internal controls, and staff oversight while partnering closely with operational leadership. The ideal candidate is a strong accounting professional with leadership experience, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced operational environment. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Operations Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and cash management Manage and execute month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules Analyze financial statements, variances, and operational results to identify trends and areas for improvement Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls Assist with annual audits and provide required documentation to external auditors Monitor cash flow activity and support forecasting initiatives Leadership & Cross-Functional Support Supervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting a collaborative team environment Partner closely with operations leadership to provide financial insight and support decision-making Collaborate with corporate finance teams on reporting, budgeting, and process improvement initiatives Support the implementation and improvement of accounting procedures and operational efficiencies Assist with special projects, process improvements, and system enhancements as needed Compliance & Reporting Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation Assist with preparation of budgets, forecasts, and management reporting packages Review and strengthen accounting controls and workflows to improve accuracy and efficiency Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5+ years of progressive accounting experience Prior experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or Senior Accountant capacity Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles Experience managing month-end close and full-cycle accounting operations Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner across departments Preferred Prior experience within waste management, transportation, logistics, construction, manufacturing, or other operational industries CPA or CPA-track preferred Experience with multi-entity or multi-location accounting environments Experience leading or mentoring accounting teams Title: Controller Location: Petersburg, VA Schedule: Onsite Employment Type: Full-time #J-18808-Ljbffr
