Finance Associate

Position Overview Arnold & Porter is seeking a junior – mid-level associate (JD 2022 - 2025) fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish to join the Sovereign Finance team in the New York or Washington, DC offices. Our preeminent Sovereign Finance team advises sovereign governments, sub-sovereigns, state‑owned enterprises, and international financial institutions on some of the most complex and innovative transactions in the global capital markets. The practice represents issuers and other market participants in sovereign bond offerings, liability management transactions, derivatives transactions, financings, refinancings, and sovereign debt restructurings. Our lawyers are recognized thought leaders in sovereign finance and have played a significant role in the development of many of the market’s most important innovations, including aggregated collective action clauses, equal ranking clauses, USAID‑guaranteed issuances, sukuk bonds, and diaspora bonds – a financing product pioneered by our team. The practice also advises on transactions and strategic assignments involving leading international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and IFC, Inter‑American Development Bank (IDB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), European Investment Bank (EIB), CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, Caribbean Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and Green Climate Fund. Responsibilities Advise sovereign governments, sub‑sovereigns, state‑owned enterprises, and international financial institutions on complex capital market transactions. Represent issuers and market participants in sovereign bond offerings, liability management, derivatives, financings, refinancings, and sovereign debt restructurings. Contribute to the development of innovative sovereign finance instruments such as aggregated collective action clauses, equal ranking clauses, USAID‑guaranteed issuances, sukuk bonds, and diaspora bonds. Engage in transactions and strategic assignments with leading international financial institutions including the IMF, World Bank, IFC, IDB, EBRD, AIIB, EIB, CAF, Caribbean Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and Green Climate Fund. Qualifications Candidates must be fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, have outstanding academic credentials, strong drafting and analytical skills, and experience with capital markets, finance, sovereign debt, project finance, or related cross‑border transactional matters. The ideal candidate will be eager to work on sophisticated international transactions, collaborate directly with clients and counterparties, and contribute to a dynamic, globally recognized practice. Applicants must currently be eligible to become licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction in which they are applying. Compensation & Benefits The salary for this position is $225,000 - $310,000, commensurate with experience. Eligibility for an hours‑based bonus is available.
