Job Title: Fiber & Copper Technician

Job Description

The Low Voltage Installer plays a key role in building and maintaining structured cabling infrastructure within a large data center environment. This position focuses on the installation, termination, testing, and splicing of fiber optic and copper cabling, ensuring reliable connectivity across network systems. You will work with a wide range of fiber types and connectors, assemble and ground network racks and pathways, and perform detailed testing and troubleshooting to meet industry standards and project specifications.

Responsibilities

• Install, terminate, test, and splice fiber optic cabling for both multimode and single-mode applications.

• Perform basic copper termination tasks, including CAT 3, CAT 5, and CAT 6 terminations.

• Install work area outlets for floors, modular furniture, and walls, including mounting faceplates and surface-mount boxes correctly.

• Build and configure telecommunications closets, including mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and related equipment.

• Install proper grounding and bonding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required, ensuring compliance with standards.

• Complete all IDC connections and ensure terminations are neat, labeled, and organized.

• Perform continuity testing on horizontal and riser cables, using a volt-ohmmeter and other test equipment.

• Troubleshoot cable issues such as opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs on horizontal and riser cabling.

• Install and terminate LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multimode and single-mode fiber.

• Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords accurately and efficiently.

• Terminate and breakout outside plant loose-tube fiber, as well as indoor tight-buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.

• Install fan-out kits, including buffer tubes, to properly manage and protect fiber strands.

• Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for both multimode and single-mode fiber links.

• Test fiber cabling using an OTDR, interpret test results, and use OTDR data to identify and correct problems end-to-end and across the network.

• Perform mechanical splicing on all types of fiber cable, ensuring clean and reliable connections.

• Perform fusion splicing on all types of fiber cable, including building entrance, maintenance spaces, and direct-buried locations.

• Install and manage cable tray, ladder rack, and J-hook systems to support and route cabling.

• Pull, route, and secure copper and fiber cables through pathways, maintaining proper bend radius and support.

• Assemble and install network racks and related hardware in data center environments.

• Handle, run, and organize materials and supplies needed for cabling and installation tasks.

• Utilize hand and power tools safely and effectively for installation, termination, and mounting work.

• Work at heights when required, following all safety protocols and using appropriate fall protection.

• Adhere strictly to site safety rules and procedures, maintaining a high level of attention to detail and avoiding shortcuts.

• Support data center construction activities related to inside plant cabling, including pulling and porting pre-terminated fiber.

• Collaborate with team members and site personnel to complete tasks on schedule within defined work hours.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with fiber optic cabling installation, termination, testing, and splicing.

• Proficiency with copper cabling installation and termination, including CAT 3, CAT 5, and CAT 6 cables.

• Ability to install and manage cable tray, ladder rack, and J-hook systems for cable support and routing.

• Strong ability to pull cable through pathways, terminate, and test copper cables accurately.

• Experience with RJ45 terminations and copper cable connections.

• Knowledge of inside plant (ISP) environments and data center construction practices.

• Ability to install, terminate, and test fiber cabling, including ribbon and single-strand fiber.

• Skill in pulling and porting pre-terminated fiber assemblies in a data center environment.

• Competence in grounding and bonding racks, equipment, and cabling in accordance with standards.

• Experience with rack assembly, including mounting patch panels, hardware, and accessories.

• Ability to perform mechanical and fusion splicing on various fiber cable types.

• Proficiency in using an OTDR for fiber testing, including interpreting results to identify and resolve network issues.

• Capability to perform continuity testing and troubleshooting on horizontal and riser cables using a volt-ohmmeter.

• Comfort working at heights and in elevated work areas while following safety protocols.

• Ability to safely and effectively use hand and power tools for installation and termination work.

• OSHA 10 certification.

• BICSI certification or equivalent industry-recognized training in structured cabling (as indicated).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in large data center environments or similar mission-critical facilities.

• Familiarity with TIA/EIA standards for fiber optic cabling and loss budget calculations.

• Knowledge of multiple fiber connector types, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP.

• Experience terminating simplex and duplex jumper cords and managing patching environments.

• Ability to work with outside plant loose-tube fiber and indoor tight-buffered fiber.

• Understanding of best practices for cable management, labeling, and documentation.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship with minimal rework.

• Reliability in following strict safety and operational procedures with limited tolerance for errors.

• Effective communication skills to coordinate tasks with team members and site personnel.

• Ability to adapt to varying daily schedules, including extended shifts when needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, active data center environment with a strong emphasis on safety and adherence to site protocols. You will work around racks, cable trays, ladder racks, J-hooks, and other infrastructure while installing and maintaining copper and fiber cabling. The setting is closely monitored, with many stakeholders onsite and a low tolerance for cutting corners, so attention to detail and compliance with procedures are critical. Standard start time is approximately 5:00 a.m., with end times ranging from about 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on 10-hour or 12-hour workdays. Occasional Saturday work may be required, typically limited to 10-hour shifts. You will regularly use hand and power tools, work at heights when necessary, and operate within a structured, safety-first environment designed to support reliable data center operations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Goodyear, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
