Job Description

Provides leadership in the coordination and delivery of quality compassionate patient care. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document care and teaching of patients and families. Effectively communicates pertinent patient and family information to the health care team. Participates in finding solutions for variances from patient goals and ensures implementation of solutions.

Administers chemotherapy and biotherapy agents according to established protocols and monitors patients for adverse reactions and side effects. Manages symptoms related to hematologic malignancies and cancer treatment, including pain, nausea, fatigue, and immunosuppression. Provides comprehensive patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medication management, and self-care strategies to promote treatment adherence and quality of life.

Collaborates with the multidisciplinary oncology team, including physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and nutritionists, to develop and implement individualized care plans. Monitors laboratory values and vital signs, recognizing and reporting critical changes that may indicate complications or treatment-related toxicities. Provides psychosocial support and patient advocacy, addressing emotional and spiritual needs while maintaining professional boundaries.

Maintains strict infection prevention protocols and educates patients on infection prevention strategies, particularly for immunocompromised patients. Ensures accurate and timely documentation of all patient care activities, treatment responses, and complications in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards. Participates in ongoing professional development and maintains current knowledge of hematology oncology nursing practices and evidence-based care standards.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• BSN preferred.
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
• Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans.
• Ability to perform a wide variety of professional nursing services.
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and hospital personnel.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

• Current licensure by the Michigan State Board of Nursing.
• Health care provider certification (BCLS).
