Food Service SUBSTITUTE (during the 2026-2027 School Year) JobID: 1722 The position is an entry‑level Food Service Helper (On‑Call Substitute) that provides coverage at various district schools as needed. Job Summary This is an entry‑level food service position involving simple, routine, manual work in the preparation and serving of food in a cafeteria or other dining area. Employees are responsible for cleaning kitchen equipment, utensils, and non‑disposable items such as glassware and china. The work is performed under direct and close supervision of a higher‑ranking food service employee. Supervisory responsibilities are not part of this class. The position may involve additional related activities as required. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Job Duties Prepare ingredients for salads, sandwiches, and cold plates in a timely manner. Portion and garnish desserts, salads, and fruits for serving. Trim, wash, and prepare vegetables. Set up serving lines with condiments, hot and cold foods, and table services; lift and carry up to 30 pounds of steam pans as required. Serve food from steam tables or lines in cafeteria‑style operations quickly and efficiently. Wash and sanitize all pots, pans, and utensils; lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Bend down, pick up and carry cases of product (up to 30 pounds) to required locations. Clean and dry silver, china, and glassware. Fill sugar bowls, salt and pepper shakers, napkin holders, and holders for utensils and straws. Clean dining tables, chairs, and trays when lunchroom aides are absent. Wash and sanitize dining room tables, chairs, and trays when lunchroom aides are absent. Operate kitchen appliances and equipment. Advise students of well‑balanced meals and communicate USDA regulations for the HHFKA. Clean kitchen and dining room area. Serve as cashier on student/faculty food service line. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics Working knowledge of balanced diet principles, National School Lunch Program regulations, portion control, proper food preparation and serving methods, safe operation of kitchen equipment and appliances, care for china, silver, and glassware, use of industrial dishwashers, cleaning supplies, and food preparation environment. Ability to follow simple oral and written directions, prepare and serve food with proper sanitary principles, receive and make correct change, deal effectively with students, faculty, and other diners, perform routine low‑skill work, dependability, and health commensurate with the demands of the position. Minimum Qualifications There are no education or experience qualifications required for this position. Special Requirement for Appointment in School Districts and BOCES Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000 and regulations of the Commissioner of Education, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required for employment in a position involving direct contact with students.
