Summer Research Program Intern 2027, Advanced Electro-Optical Systems (Group 09-99)

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group specializes in the rapid design and prototyping of innovative electro-optic systems that address challenges facing the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and other U.S. government entities. The group maintains broad expertise in satellite systems, electro-optical and infrared sensors, charge-coupled devices, electronics, image processing, and low–size/weight/power optical communications systems. The vertically-integrated group leverages this core expertise to architect, design, prototype, and deploy hardware and software systems in support of mission needs.

Position Description

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group is seeking curious, self-driven students with a passion for learning, exploration, and solving complex problems. As a summer intern, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and scientists on real-world research, rapid prototyping, and operational system support that directly impact national security. Examples of past intern projects include: Optimizing image processing algorithms for novel space-based systems Implementing FPGA-based data serialization and laser modulation solutions Prototyping sensorless brushless DC motor control algorithms for precision pointing Building high-fidelity software simulations for stellar imaging systems Investigating 3D scene reconstruction techniques for space imagery Modeling reflectivity metrics for space materials Requirements

Currently enrolled in a degree program in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field At least two years of undergraduate study completed (or equivalent experience) at time of employment Relevant coursework, interest, and experience with at least one of the following areas: optics, space systems, orbital mechanics, image processing, control theory, signal processing, dynamic system modeling, robotics, microcontroller and embedded system development, digital and analog circuit design, serial communication protocols, real-time operating systems, or software development Familiarity with C/C++, MATLAB, Python, or other scientific programming languages Summer Research Program Overview

The Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers. As an SRP intern, you’ll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events—all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers. Internships are typically 10–12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates, typically May through early August. Housing support is available for eligible non-local interns, including access to discounted university housing in Boston and a one-time taxable relocation payment. Complimentary daily shuttle transportation is provided from Boston-based housing to and from the Lab. Compensation Hourly pay rates below are effective January 2026 – December 2026 and will be reviewed again for Summer 2027. Rates are based on the highest academic year or degree completed before the internship start date.
