Job Description

This float phlebotomist position provides hands-on experience in outpatient settings, performing high-volume blood draws, specimen processing, and packaging for shipment to a centralized medical testing site. You will support multiple clinic locations, coordinate closely with clinic staff, and ensure accurate, timely collection and handling of specimens while maintaining high standards of patient care and laboratory safety.

Responsibilities

• Perform approximately 25–30 blood draws per day using venipuncture and other phlebotomy techniques in outpatient clinic settings.
• Collect patient blood samples accurately and safely, following proper venipuncture procedures and specimen collection protocols.
• Process collected specimens, including proper labeling, handling, and preparation for transport according to established procedures.
• Package blood samples correctly for shipment, ensuring all packaging meets laboratory and transport requirements.
• Coordinate daily with clinic staff to organize and schedule patient blood draws across assigned locations.
• Arrange and schedule courier pick-ups or shipping of collected samples to the designated medical testing site.
• Follow the correct order of draw, including BD Vacutainer tube color sequence, for multiple-tube collections to maintain specimen integrity.
• Maintain accurate documentation and records for all specimens drawn, processed, and shipped.
• Float between multiple clinic locations, adapting to different teams and workflows as needed.
• Contribute to a collaborative team environment by communicating clearly, supporting colleagues, and following site-specific procedures.
• Adhere to all safety, infection control, and confidentiality standards while interacting professionally with patients and staff.

• At least 6 months of experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant performing blood draws, specimen processing, and packaging.
• Documented experience completing 200 or more solo blood draws.
• Proficiency in phlebotomy and venipuncture techniques, including safe and efficient blood collection.
• Demonstrated ability to perform specimen collection and specimen processing in an outpatient setting.
• Strong knowledge of the correct order of draw for multiple-tube collections.
• Ability to identify and follow BD Vacutainer tube colors in the proper order of draw.
• Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification or certificate.
• High school diploma or equivalent education.
• Ability to work the scheduled hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Willingness and ability to work without planned time off during the first 90 days of employment.
• Effective communication skills to coordinate with clinic staff and team members.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple draws, processing steps, and shipments each day.

• Experience working in outpatient clinics or similar patient-facing healthcare environments.
• Comfort working both in stationary roles and in float positions across multiple sites.
• Ability to adapt quickly to different teams, locations, and workflows.
• Reliability and punctuality, especially for early morning shifts.
• Strong customer service and patient-care orientation, with a professional and calm demeanor.
• Motivation to grow phlebotomy skills in a setting that offers hands-on experience and structured performance-based raises.

This role is based in outpatient clinic settings, with two locations in Warren and one location in Detroit. The schedule follows a part-time, early-morning shift on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will work in a combination of stationary and float assignments, traveling between designated clinic sites as needed. At the main site, there are approximately 15 team members onsite, while offsite locations typically have between 0 and 2 colleagues present, and you may work with teams ranging from 0 to 3 people depending on the location. The environment emphasizes high-volume, hands-on phlebotomy, specimen collection, and processing using standard phlebotomy tools and BD Vacutainer systems. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, supporting a professional and consistent appearance across all locations. The setting offers a collaborative, supportive atmosphere with opportunities to develop skills and receive performance-based raises after six months.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Novi, MI.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
